Marqhabash, meaning City of Refuge in the Mannic tongue, is a city located on the coast of the Shadowfell. The city was founded by Mannic refugees fleeing the chaos of the Fall of the Kingdom of Mankind. They used magical sorceries to protect their city from the Great Flood, sending their city into an isolated pocket dimension for several thousand years. Disconnected from any survivors and the government of the Deshenite Kingdom, the people of Maqhabash established a democratic republic which endures to the modern day.
Part of the way that the city’s inhabitants were able to survive the Great Flood was through an unfortunate deal made with Buzdai. The city remains trapped in the state of partial intersection between multiple planes, and as a result once one spends more than a few weeks in the city, they cannot leave.
The city is prohibitively hard to reach, existing partially in the real world and partially in another plane. As such, to those who have not been granted access to the city, it appears as a mirage: fuzzy and flickering, seeming to come in and out of existence.
The people of Marqhabash have a proud democratic tradition, and have close trading and diplomatic ties with the city of Pashayos. Marqhabash is known as a city of refugees and the downtrodden, and has often been a destination for those fleeing persecution. In recent years, many Fey, fleeing the forceful urbanization policies of Pelegon, have made their homes in the city.
The most striking aspect of Marqhabash is the city's artificial sun. Due to the darkness of the Shadowfell, the people of the city used their magic to create an artificial sun, which sits at the tip of the city's tallest tower, providing the city with light and warmth.
