Bradan's Blind Bard Brother

Left on the doorstep of the McCallum family, Jermaine is Bradan's brother.  He is also legally blind, but not totally (see below).  He has a brilliant mind and is a musical prodigy, but can't be bothered with hard work, and becomes bored easily with anything that takes a bit of attention or practice.  If something doesn't involve music or magic or directly helping someone, he can't be bothered with it.  He only just recently earned the rank of Sage within the Slingers, and his been assigned his very first Neophyte!  He lives in Glaisinkyl and has a duty to honor and protect it, as he is the chosen Fiddler Fae of that community.

Jermaine and Bradan are about the same age, with Bradan likely being a few months older.  Growing up, they were mistaken for fraternal twins.  Of course now that's not the case, as Jermaine stopped aging when they were in their twenties and Bradan didn't!

Flavor Requirements

Disability - Legally Blind

You're supposed to have one of those white canes with the red end so that everyone knows what it's for, but Jermaine doesn't care about rules like that, and uses this walking stick to help him get around instead.

Jermaine is legally blind, but not totally.  He can see well enough not to walk into a tree, but uses a cane to get around, as an imperfection in the sidewalk or the like could cause him to trip.  He can see vague colors and shapes, but it's very blurry.  He could read extra extra large print if he put his face right up to it, but can never read normal size print.  He can, of course, read braille.  He can't recognize faces, but he could, for instance, happen to remember that you were wearing a red shirt and remember who you are later in the day.  He was born this way, and this is likely why he was rejected by his fae parents. 

Vibration Sense

This is not quite like Toph from Avatar, but he can sense where you are and how you're standing.  If you're close, he can sense your breathing and your pulse.   

Talent (Musical Ability, Reasoning, Teaching, Empathy)

Jermaine is brilliant, but only ever focuses his mind on music, magic, and helping others. 

My Own Way

Jermaine started play with this feature taken 7 times, to represent that he gets by on pure intellect and sharpness rather than actually sitting down and learning anything.  He always makes it up as he goes based on pure reasoning and good guesses.

Creator

Jermaine uses his Glamoured Conjuration skill to create musical instruments that can give a magical bonus to skill checks to use them. They detect as magical, and the bonus is dispelled by anything that dispels glamour. 

Magic

Enchantment Glamour

Jermaine's enchantment glamour channels through his music.  Anyone except for himself who hears it (naturally only, not through an electronic recording) can roll Resist Influence opposed by his Enchantment Glamour to avoid the effect (roll separately against multiple targets).  One can also opt to allow the effect.  The first roll occurs after you've heard the song for one minute.  The second roll occurs after another minute passes, with a -1 penalty to resist it.  As long as you can hear the music, you roll once per minute, increasing the penalty by 1 each time. 

  • Song of Sleep - if you fail the opposed roll, you fall asleep.  If you succeed on your Resist Influence roll, you fall asleep slowly over several seconds, able to get yourself onto a flat surface without falling over. 
  • Song of Inspiration - Half of Jermaine's margin of success (round up, minimum 1) is added to your next roll.  You can only benefit from this once per scene. 

Faerie Glade

Jermaine's glade takes the form of a cozy restaurant/lounge with a stage, including grand piano.  Other musical instruments and equipment can be found in a storage room off to the side.  If one finds themselves wanting for appetizers or beverages, they appear at the nearest table.  Such items count as fae food.  The chairs are comfy and some of the sofa's are long enough for sleeping.  A few of them even have pull-out beds.

Also... when you're in here, you are also blind in the same way that Jermaine is. You can apply his template! (Disability: Legally Blind)

There are three ways to get in:

  1. The original entrance is outside of Glaisinkyl.  If this one is destroyed, the whole glade is destroyed.  Crawl through the hole in the spiral-shaped tree shown to the right. 
  2. Bradan's office in the Herival Wing of the James Craig building on campus, via a Bonsai tree that looks just like the main entrance. 
  3. Bradan's office in the Tower, also via a Bonsai tree that looks just like the main entrance. 

The magic in the Bonsai trees would be disrupted if they were to be moved.  They are simply the target that the magic is locked onto. 

Glamoured Conjuration

  • One Man Band - Jermaine temporarily conjures musical instruments that float in the air and play on their own.  They last five minutes.  The result of the magic skill roll is the effective Musical Instrument roll for its duration. 
  • Create Musical Instrument - this is for creating a Cool Item: Musical Instrument that gives a bonus to Musical Instrument checks made to play it.
