Description

From below, aarakocra look like large birds and thus are sometimes called birdfolk. Only when they roost on a branch or walk across the ground is their Humanoid nature clear. Standing upright, aarakocra are typically about 5 feet tall, and they have long, narrow legs that taper to sharp talons. Feathers cover their bodies—usually red, orange, yellow, brown, or gray. Their heads are also avian, often resembling those of parrots or eagles. While Orcs have been the dominant race of the land, Aarakocra have been the ultimate predators of the skies in the Savage Lands. Mastery of ranged weapons, made them superior forces in open fields and effective ambushers in canyons.

Origins

Aarakocra were initially designed by Andralte after Laia gifted her a bird. She wanted a sentient race with the possibility of growth in the skies. Iskar found the concept fascinating and decided to help a bit with the design. Before the design was finalized, Dominaria also joined in, explaining how such race would be an easy prey, as they had made Aaracokra innocent and harmless by that point. Dominaria, added sharp talons, a crushing beak and most importantly, a vicious predator's instinct in the final mix. The design was finalized and Aarakocra came to be.

Genetics

Aarakocra's genetics and lifestyle has no room for laws and following orders. They heavily favor Chaotic alignments with some of them, usually elders or leaders, being more neutral. In terms of physical traits, Aaracokra are built to be lightweight, weighing only half of what a human would be at the same height and built. Their bones are hollow and thus more fragile, and the density of their blood is lower.

Lifespan

Aaracokra mature by the age of 3 and their lifespan is about 30 years. With such short lifespan, many of them say "There's no time to follow rules" as they indulge in their chaotic desires.

Aarakocra Traits

As an aarakocra, you have the following racial traits:

Ability Scores: increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Your available choices are Dexterity, Wisdom or Charisma.

Creature Type: You are a Humanoid.

Size: Your size is Medium.

Speed: Your walking speed is 30 feet.

Flight: Because of your wings, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. You can’t use this flying speed if you’re wearing medium, heavy armor or carry more than 50% of your maximum capacity. Long distance flying requires a long rest every ~20-24 miles of flying.

Wind Caller: Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the gust of wind spell with this trait, without requiring a material component. Once you cast the spell with this trait, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have of 2nd level or higher. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spell casting ability for it when you cast gust of wind with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Languages: Your character can speak, read and write (writing requires INT score 6 or higher) Goblin and one other language of your that you and your DM agree is appropriate for your character's backstory. A list of languages and their regions can be found in Languages.
