The Gloomguard act as the enforcers of the Shadowlords will, particularly serving under the cruel command of Shadowlord Decimus, who resides within the Ebony Fortress at the heart of the City of Evernight. Known for their merciless rule, the Gloomguard are feared by the denizens of the shadowy city, as their authority often manifests in acts of brutal punishment carried out with sadistic pleasure.
Notoriously corrupt, the Gloomguard are infamous for their discriminatory actions, often punishing the populace not based on law or order, but on their own individual, sadistic whims. Whether breaking the bones of a dissenter or tormenting a helpless victim for sport, the Gloomguard enforce the Shadowlord’s will with extreme cruelty, instilling fear and submission across Evernight.
The Gloomguard typically wear grated metal helmets or terrifying iron masks to conceal their identities, their obscured faces adding to the atmosphere of dread that surrounds them. Their faceless presence turns them into symbols of fear rather than individuals, representing the unrelenting and indiscriminate cruelty of the Shadowlords. Each Gloomguard is armed with blunted weapons such as maces, mauls, or warhammers, which they use not just to kill but to break the spirit and bodies of those they deem rebellious or disobedient.
Decimus himself carefully selects the Gloomguard, favoring Draekhir warriors for their inherent cruelty and skill in combat. Their leader, Bloodhand, Decimus’ right-hand captain, oversees the operations of the Gloomguard with an iron fist, ensuring that no rebellion can flourish in the shadowy streets of Evernight. After the Battle of the Four Armies, however, the Gloomguard was decimated by the Soulmonger Crystals activated from the Floating City of Netheril.
