The Flux

The Flux is a vast, unstable space storm occupying the deep-space region known as The Far-Fringes, beyond the outer boundary of The Aurelion Ascendancy territory. Born from a massive Khaos Rift during the Second Continuum Crisis, the Flux is not merely a storm of matter and radiation—it is a zone where the fundamental laws of physics exist in continuous instability.

Within the Flux, gravitational constants fluctuate, time dilation becomes irregular, and Rift Energy interactions destabilize unpredictably. Space travel through the region is considered nearly impossible. Even heavily shielded vessels risk structural disintegration, dimensional misalignment, or spontaneous reality collapse.

For millennia, the Flux has persisted as a lingering wound in the fabric of the Prime Plane.

Origins & History

The Flux originated during the Second Continuum Crisis when large-scale Rift destabilization weakened the veil between the Prime Plane and the Plane of Khaos. While other rifts were sealed or contained, one massive tear in The Far-Fringes proved resistant to stabilization.

The rupture did not close. Instead, it metastasized.

Khaos energy flooded into the surrounding galaxies, corrupting star systems, destabilizing hyper-lanes, and corrupting gravitational order. The result was a permanently unstable sector where cosmic laws behave in unpredictable cycles.

From the Third Age through the current age, the Flux has remained active. Attempts by the Aurelion Ascendancy to contain or collapse the rift have failed, with several expeditionary fleets lost entirely.

The region is now classified as a permanent anomaly zone.

Physical Properties

The Flux is characterized by:

  • Gravitational shear waves that distort spatial orientation.
  • Temporal fluctuations that desynchronize onboard chronometers.
  • Electromagnetic surges incompatible with conventional shielding.
  • Rift-energy storms that spontaneously form and collapse matter.

Star systems within the Flux exhibit erratic stellar behavior, including premature collapse, reversed accretion flow, and spectral instability.

Hyper-lanes entering the region fragment or dissolve entirely. Navigational systems fail as spatial coordinates lose consistency.

Use of Rift Magic or Rift-powered technology inside the Flux is exceptionally dangerous. Energy feedback loops can cause uncontrolled dimensional ruptures or biological mutation.

Travel within the Flux is considered a last-resort undertaking.

Common documented outcomes include:

  • Hull collapse due to gravitational stress
  • Crew cognitive liquefaction from Khaos resonance
  • Dimensional displacement into unknown coordinates
  • Vessel disappearance without trace

Even advanced Aurelios warships cannot maintain stable course for extended periods. The Halcyion Federation has similarly declared the region non-navigable.

Strategic Impact

The Flux has significantly shaped interstellar geopolitics.

For the Aurelion Ascendancy, it represents:

  • A persistent destabilizing presence on their frontier.
  • A barrier preventing expansion into The Far-Fringes.
  • A source of recurring Khaos incursions.

For surrounding systems, the Flux acts as both shield and threat.Myr'Khruul, Abyssal Assimilantand aberrant species occasionally emerge from its outer edges, having adapted to its instability.

The Eye of Aurelion monitors the Flux closely for dimensional fluctuation spikes.

Khaos Resonance

Scholars debate whether the Flux is merely a lingering Rift anomaly or a semi-stable bridgehead for Khaos itself.

Within its core, sensors detect patterns inconsistent with Khaos anomalies. Some interpret these readings as evidence of structured interference—possibly the subconscious stirring of Azhorra'tha or distant Revenant Titan activity.

If true, the Flux may not be a scar, but an active frontier for a war against itself on the Prime.

Legacy

The Flux is a reminder that the Continuum Crisis did not end cleanly.

While empires rose and fell through the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Ages, the flux endured. It remains a zone where reality weakens, where navigation fails, and where Khaos presses continuously against the Prime Planeat the edge of known space.
