Maartina Janssen, a Darakhul, operates independently as a black marketeer in the Old Knot District. Rumors suggest that she is involved in trading with powerful entities from outside the city, dealing in dangerous magical artifacts and forbidden knowledge. This secretive network is said to involve high-stakes deals that could pose significant risks to the district. Captain Marieke de Vries is investigating corruption among the guards that may be allowing these illicit items to move between districts.

Her specialty is magic item rejects, discarded by wizards, but that serve some other nefarious purpose. Occasionally she comes upon something more .. unique.

Story: Mere Stones

Old Knot District

The night was thick with fog, the kind that swallowed sound and sight alike. In the labyrinthine alleys of the Old Knot District, shadows moved with a life of their own, and even the most hardened criminals tread lightly. This was Maartina Janssen’s domain, a place where the rules of the city held little sway, and where she conducted her illicit business with a practiced hand.

Maartina was a Darakhul, her pale skin and unnervingly sharp features hidden beneath a heavy cloak. Her reputation as a black marketeer was well-earned; she dealt in the forbidden and the dangerous, things that others feared to even speak of. Tonight, she was preparing for a particularly risky transaction, one that had even her icy blood running a bit colder.

In a dilapidated warehouse on the outskirts of Old Knot, Maartina waited. The building was filled with the remnants of her less-than-reputable dealings: broken magic items, cracked crystal balls, and cursed trinkets lay scattered on rickety tables. But tonight, she was not interested in any of these. Her focus was on the object she had placed on the table before her—a small, intricately carved box, inside which lay the Teeth of Krang, ancient relics said to possess immense power.

The air in the room grew heavy, the shadows deepening until they seemed to pulse with a dark energy. Maartina felt a presence, something not entirely of this world, and her eyes narrowed as she turned to face the figure that emerged from the darkness.

The entity was minor in the grand scheme of things, but to Maartina, it was still a force to be reckoned with. Its form was amorphous, shifting and writhing like a mass of liquid shadows. A pair of dimly glowing eyes, the only constant feature, stared at her with an unsettling intensity.

"You possess The Teeth of Krang," the entity’s voice slithered into her mind, bypassing the need for sound. "I have come to claim them."

Maartina was unfazed. She had dealt with all manner of beings in her time, and while this one was certainly more eldritch than most, she knew the game well. "Claim? Hardly. We’re here to make a trade."

The entity’s eyes narrowed, glowing with an eerie light. "I offer you secrets of the multiverse. Knowledge beyond the comprehension of mortals. Power to shape reality as you see fit."

Maartina suppressed a chuckle. "Knowledge is well and good, but it doesn't fill my belly... and I am always hungry. I deal in more... tangible assets. Gems, preferably diamonds. If you don’t have those, I’m afraid we have nothing more to discuss."

The entity seemed to seethe, its form expanding and contracting as if struggling to contain itself. "You reject the secrets of existence for mere stones?"

"Stones that have value here and now," Maartina replied coolly. "I have no use for riddles and cryptic whispers. If you don’t have what I want, the deal’s off."

There was a tense silence, the air thick with the potential for violence. But before the entity could respond, the door to the warehouse was kicked open with a loud crash. A group of figures spilled in, their weapons drawn and their eyes gleaming with malice. The Seven Sins had arrived.

"Well, well, well," a gruff voice called out as Yonkers, the hulking bodyguard and fixer for Mandrill, stepped forward. "Look what we have here. A little trade going down without the Guild's blessing? That's not gonna fly."

Maartina's expression remained impassive, but inside, she cursed the timing. The Seven Sins had their fingers in every pie in Old Knot, and operating without their sanction was a dangerous gamble. Still, she wasn't one to back down easily.

The entity, sensing the shift in power, began to shrink back into the shadows, its form flickering with barely restrained fury. "This is not over, Darakhul. The Teeth of Krang will be mine." With that, it vanished, leaving only a lingering sense of dread in its wake.

Yonkers and his men surrounded Maartina, their weapons ready but their leader smirking. "You know the rules, Janssen. You don’t do business in Old Knot without us knowing. Now, what’ve you got to say for yourself?"

Maartina slowly raised her hands, her cold eyes meeting Yonkers’ without a trace of fear. "Just trying to make an honest living," she said, the irony thick in her tone.

Yonkers chuckled, a dark sound that echoed through the warehouse. "Honest? You’re as honest as a snake in the grass. Now, hand over whatever you’ve got, and maybe we’ll let you off with just a warning."

Before the situation could escalate further, the sharp sound of marching boots reached their ears. The Iron Guard was closing in, likely alerted by the disturbance. Yonkers cursed under his breath, motioning for his men to scatter.

"This ain’t over, Janssen," he snarled, pointing a thick finger at her before he and his crew melted into the shadows, leaving Maartina alone as the Iron Guard burst into the warehouse.

The guards, clad in their gleaming armor, took in the scene with wary eyes. The leader of the squad, a stern-faced captain, Captain Dirk Vrederic, approached Maartina.

"What’s going on here?" the captain demanded.

Maartina, ever the cool operator, shrugged nonchalantly. "Just a little misunderstanding, officer. Nothing illegal here."

The captain's eyes narrowed, but without the presence of the Thieves Guild or the entity, there was little evidence of wrongdoing. With a tight-lipped frown, he ordered his men to search the premises, but all they found were broken trinkets and worthless baubles. Frustrated, the lieutenant finally waved them off.

"You’re lucky tonight, Janssen," he muttered, before turning to leave. "But we’ll be watching you."

As the Iron Guard filed out, Maartina allowed herself a small, satisfied smile. She had lost the Teeth of Krang, but she had kept her life and her freedom, and in Old Knot, that was more than enough. The night was still young, and there were always more deals to be made.
