Mirrorcat and Marceline: Love in the Shadows
Scene: The dimly lit room in the upper floors of a hidden safehouse, nestled in the heart of the Upper District. A single candle flickers on a table as Mirrorcat stands by the window, her silver fur gleaming softly in the moonlight. Marceline sits on the edge of the bed, sharpening her sword, the tension between them palpable. Mirrorcat’s tail twitches in frustration, while Marceline’s remains still, betraying her inner conflict.
Mirrorcat: (quietly, but with a sharp edge)
“You never want to be seen with me, Marceline. It’s like you’re ashamed of us.”
Marceline: (pausing mid-sharpen, her gaze lowering)
“It’s not that.”
Mirrorcat: (turning to face her, voice rising with frustration)
“Then what is it? Every time I mention us—talking about us openly—you shut down. You keep me hidden away like some secret, like you’re embarrassed. I thought… I thought things would be different now that we can live freely.”
Marceline: (voice tight, setting the sword down)
“It’s not about freedom, Mirrorcat.”
Mirrorcat: (taking a step closer, green eyes narrowing)
“Then what? Tell me. Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you don’t want to be seen with me. You don’t want people knowing about us. And it hurts. It makes me feel like you’re ashamed of me.”
Marceline: (standing up, turning away)
“I’m not ashamed of you. You’re the best thing I’ve ever had.”
Mirrorcat: (tail flicking with irritation, not buying it)
“Then why? Why keep it secret? Why not let the world know that we’re together? I want to be with you—openly, proudly. And frankly, I’m tired of people whispering that I’m obsessed with Mandrill. I want them to know the truth. I want them to know that it’s you I love, not him.”
Marceline: (clenching her fists, voice low, strained)
“I don’t care what people think about you and Mandrill. This isn’t about your reputation.”
Mirrorcat: (crossing her arms, voice icy)
“Then what is it about, Marceline? Why won’t you say it?”
Marceline: (turning, finally meeting Mirrorcat’s eyes, her voice breaking)
“Because I don’t deserve you. I don’t deserve any of this.”
Mirrorcat: (taken aback, softening slightly)
“What are you talking about?”
Marceline: (taking a step toward her, struggling with her words)
“Do you know what I’ve done? Who I work for? I killed a village of innocent beastmen because it was my ‘duty.’ And now I serve a monster. Vexilar the Vile could use you—could use us—against me. He’d find a way to hurt you, or worse. You think keeping us quiet is about shame? It’s about protecting you.”
Mirrorcat: (voice softening but still firm)
“Protecting me? From what? Marceline, I can handle myself. You’re not the only one who knows how to navigate dangerous people. I live in the world of shadows, same as you.”
Marceline: (shaking her head)
“Not like this. You don’t understand what Vexilar is capable of. He’s always watching, always waiting for a way to control me. If he knew about us—about how much you mean to me—he’d exploit it. I can’t let that happen.”
Mirrorcat: (closing the distance, her hand gently touching Marceline’s arm)
“You don’t have to do this alone. I’m not afraid of him. I’m not afraid of what might happen. I’m afraid of losing you because you think you don’t deserve this. You think you don’t deserve love.”
Marceline: (her voice breaking, pulling away slightly)
“I’m not worth the risk, Mirrorcat. You deserve someone who isn’t broken. Someone who doesn’t have blood on their hands.”
Mirrorcat: (gently but firmly)
“You’re worth everything to me. All I want is to be with you. I don’t care about your past, or Vexilar, or anything else. I love you, Marceline. But I can’t keep hiding. Not like this.”
Marceline: (closing her eyes, voice raw)
“And if something happens to you because of me? If Vexilar finds out?”
Mirrorcat: (lifting Marceline’s chin, forcing her to look into her eyes)
“Then we deal with it—together. I’m not afraid of him, and I’m not afraid of what we are. But I can’t keep pretending we don’t exist. I want the world to know that you’re mine.”
Marceline: (quietly, almost a whisper)
“And I want to be yours. But I don’t know how to keep you safe.”
Mirrorcat: (smiling softly, her tail curling in relief)
“We’ll figure it out. We always do. But you don’t have to protect me from everything. Let me in, Marceline. Let me be part of your life. Not just in the shadows.”
Marceline: (sighing, tension slowly releasing as she pulls Mirrorcat close)
“I don’t know if I can change overnight.”
Mirrorcat: (leaning into her, voice soft)
“I don’t need you to change. I just need you to trust me.”
Marceline: (holding her tightly, whispering)
“I do trust you. I’m just afraid.”
Mirrorcat: (smiling, her voice full of affection)
“Good. Fear keeps us sharp. But love? Love keeps us alive. We’ll get through this. Together.”
In that quiet, shared moment, Marceline finally allows herself to lean into the possibility of being loved, even if it terrifies her. Mirrorcat, relieved to have broken through her walls, holds her tightly, knowing they still have many challenges ahead—but for now, they have each other.
