Camp Immortal: Where Ruins Meet Resilience

Nestled within the shallow impact crater of an ancient asteroid strike, 40 miles east of Seregon on the One Road, Camp Immortal is a stark yet thriving outpost that bridges the past and present. Its mix of rugged practicality and ancient mystery creates an environment steeped in history, camaraderie, and subtle unease.

The Road to Camp Immortal

wide, ancient stone road connects the camp to Seregon, its surface smooth and weathered but durable. Wide enough for two carts to travel side by side, the road sees little traffic apart from miners and the occasional merchant caravan. The Immortals of Karsis maintain patrols along the road to ensure its safety.

Crater Setting

The camp sits within a quarter-mile-wide crater, its jagged edges softened by time but unmistakable in origin. The exposed bedrock at the crater's core tells a story of immense force, with veins of mineral-rich stone cutting through the rock. Over centuries, the area’s natural drainage systems formed a swamp, long since cleared by human hands, though the river that runs through the camp still hints at the crater's marshy history. A man-made stream now diverts water in and out of the crater, keeping the camp dry and usable while feeding the surrounding jungle’s greenery.

The Ancient Foundations

Scattered across the crater’s perimeter are the remnants of an ancient civilization: cracked and moss-covered stone foundations with images of tigers and lotus flowers, hinting at a long-lost settlement. The Immortals of Karsis, upon their arrival, cleared much of the overgrown jungle and incorporated these ruins into the camp’s construction.

  • The foundations of some buildings remain visible, their color and texture clearly contrasting with the more recent stone and timber of the camp.

  • The Assembly of Seregon, seeking a more practical use for the site, gifted the area to the Immortals in exchange for their protection of travelers.

Camp Layout

Central Structures:

  • Main Courtyard:
At the heart of Camp Immortal is a large open courtyard. This space serves as a gathering point, with the ancient stone well at its center. The well provides crisp, clean water, its origins believed to predate the asteroid strike itself.

    • Dragonborn Guards: A member of the Immortals of Karsis always patrols the courtyard, ensuring order and security.
  • The Horny Al-Miraj Inn:
Built atop an ancient stone foundation, the inn’s cozy charm contrasts with its formidable base. The lower walls are remnants of the old structures, their stone darker and etched with faint, weathered carvings.

    • The inn’s warm hearth and hearty meals are a welcome relief for weary travelers.
  • Smithy and Stables:
These utilitarian buildings stand on the far side of the courtyard, their newer stonework blending with the ancient slabs below. The smithy, operated by Joris van den Berg, is a hub of activity by day, while the stables house pack animals and mining supplies.

Fortifications:

  • Stone Walls:
Encircling the camp, the walls rise 15 feet high, with sections built directly atop ancient foundations.

    Watchtower:

  • The two-story main tower provides a commanding view of the surrounding jungle. From its top, guards can see the crater’s outer edge, the jungle canopy, and the wide stone road leading into camp.

Daily Life and Atmosphere

Camp Immortal hums with activity during the day.

  • Miners: Arriving from or departing for the Emerald Cradle Mine, miners exchange stories of treasure and danger over pints of ale in the inn.

  • Guards: The Immortals of Karsis, stoic and disciplined, maintain order while watching for threats from the wilds.

  • Traders: Rare merchants bring supplies and news from Seregon, though many consider the journey to the camp an unnecessary risk.

At night, the camp grows quiet, the stillness broken only by the crackle of torches, the howl of distant creatures, and the faint rustle of leaves in the jungle breeze. Guards keep a vigilant watch, their eyes scanning for movement in the shadows.

Hints of Mystery

  • Scholar's Jungle Hut: An overgrown structure near the crater’s edge houses remnants of the Lykeion scholars’ research. Faded scrolls and broken tools litter the site, and faint magical residue lingers in the air.

  • Strange Sounds: Occasionally, faint whispers echo from the jungle, growing louder near the man-made stream that runs through the crater. Some believe these to be remnants of the swamp’s restless spirits.

  • Footprints in the Foundations: Travelers often report finding clawed footprints embedded in the old stone, as if something ancient stalked the camp long ago.

Camp Immortal is more than a waystation—it’s a place steeped in forgotten history, guarded by warriors bound to duty, and haunted by whispers of the past.

Evening in the Common Room of The Horny Al-Miraj

Camp Immortal

The wooden beams groan softly as a night breeze slips through the half-open shutters, carrying the scent of rain-soaked jungle and distant cookfires. Inside the Horny Al-Miraj, the warmth of the hearth’s dying embers mingles with the aroma of spiced stew, ale-soaked wood, and damp leather.

At the long picnic-style table, a handful of miners nurse their drinks, their voices hushed after a long day in the Emerald Cradle Mine. A scarred dwarf, his knuckles still dusted with ore, leans in toward his comrades, muttering about "a new shaft that just... ended. Like something swallowed the stone whole." Across from him, a broad-shouldered dragonborn with a freshly bandaged hand chuckles bitterly.

"That's not the strangest thing down there." He lifts his mug in a silent toast to whatever horrors the mines hold.

Against the far wall, two Immortals of Karsis—their polished breastplates catching the dim glow of lantern light—stand in quiet conversation, their expressions unreadable. One of them, a bronze dragonborn with a heavy greataxe across his back, tosses a handful of carved bone dice across a low table, watching them rattle against the wood before grunting in mild frustration. His companion, a red-scaled sergeant, merely shakes his head.

At the bar, Joris van den Berg, the camp’s smith, wipes his hands on a soot-stained rag as he leans against the counter, trading words with Lidewij, the innkeeper’s wife. She listens with a practiced ear while deftly refilling a patron’s mug.

"Felt a tremor today," Joris says, his voice rough from years of smithing.
"Bah, we always feel tremors," Lidewij replies, though her fingers tighten subtly around the tankard she’s polishing.

A lantern swings gently overhead, its flickering light casting long, shifting shadows over the walls. Beyond the thick wooden door, the night sounds of Camp Immortal stir—the low howl of a distant beast, the hushed voices of patrolling guards, and the steady, rhythmic dripping of water from the stone eaves.

Another night in Camp Immortal.

Scholars Jungle Hut

Scholar's Jungle Hut: Secrets of the Emerald Throne Citadel

The overgrown ruins of the abandoned hut sit near the crater’s edge, their walls cloaked in vines and moss. The faint hum of magical residue lingers in the air, hinting at secrets yet uncovered. There is a locked door (DC15 Dexterity).

Clues About the Emerald Throne Citadel

  1. A Carved Obsidian Tablet:
Found among the rubble, this tablet is etched with ancient Rakshasan script and faintly glowing runes. A DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana or History) check reveals that the inscriptions describe the Emerald Throne Citadel, an opulent fortress ruled by King Saudasa, known for his cunning and ruthless domination of serpentfolk.

    • A passage reads:
“The Emerald Throne stood as the pinnacle of might, its foundations forged in the blood of serpents. Those who dared challenge Saudasa’s reign found themselves crushed beneath his emerald light.”
  2. Broken Statuary Fragments:
Scattered across the study are chunks of shattered jade and gold statuary. The largest piece is part of a tiger-headed figure, the remnants of an arm holding a serpent by the neck. A DC 15 Investigation check reveals that the statue matches descriptions of King Saudasa found in the scholars’ notes.

  3. Faded Scrolls in Orb of Preservation (below):

    A Hidden Compartment:

  4. Beneath a collapsed desk is a hidden drawer containing a small emerald seal of an open hand. This is the sigil of Saudasa’s court. The seal radiates faint magical energy, and a DC 13 Identify spell or check reveals it to be a symbolic key to Rakshasan rituals (opens door in the well)

Magic Items Left by the Scholars

  1. Orb of Preservation: with the Scroll of the Kashmala

    • A crystalline sphere that can hold one fragile object, such as a scroll, artifact, or delicate sample, within an invisible stasis field. The item inside is protected from decay, damage, or magical effects until removed.

Atmosphere of the Hut

This abandoned site carries the weight of forgotten knowledge and untapped secrets. The faint glow of magical residue, the whispers of Rakshasan lore, and the scattered remnants of scholarly research offer tantalizing hints about the Emerald Throne Citadel and King Saudasa’s dark reign. As the Sentinels explore the study, they may piece together the mysteries of the crater and the powers that still linger beneath its surface.

Disguised Threat

The Betrayal of the Emerald Throne

Overview

Two rakshasa, Putana, Youngest Son of Ravana, and Dvaarash Karnak, masquerading as miners, arrive at Camp Immortal. Their mission: to reclaim a legendary artifact hidden in the Splintered Tomb, an ancient rakshasa citadel buried beneath the camp. The artifact is accessible only with a magical signet ring—an heirloom passed down among rakshasa bloodlines. The two rakshasa appear cooperative, but one harbors darker ambitions.

In the dead of night, Dvaarash Karnak, a sorcerer fueled by prophecy and ambition, murders his companion to seize the ring, revealing his rakshasa nature in the process. The victim's finger is missing, severed along with the ring that grants access to the Splintered Tomb.

The Splintered Tomb & Karnak’s True Purpose

Dvaarash Karnak and the Kashmala: The Skull of King Saudasa

Dvaarash Karnak does not seek mere wealth or dominion—he seeks what was lost.

Long ago, King Saudasa, the last ruler of the Emerald Throne Citadel, perished in a cataclysmic asteroid strike. Unlike the kings before him, he did not submit to the sacred Kashmala ritual of Kapala, the rite in which a failing ruler's skull is emptied, drained, and drunk from by his successor, ensuring that his wisdom and knowledge would never be lost. Whether by arrogance, fear, or cruel fate, Saudasa died unconsumed, and with him, the knowledge of the last great rakshasa empire vanished.

To the Kashmala, his death was a blasphemy against the natural order. A king should not be taken by random catastrophe—he must be judged, unmade, and reborn through those who surpass him. But Saudasa was denied this fate, and his knowledge was scattered like ash in the wind.

For centuries, the Kashmala have sought his skull, believing that if they retrieve it and complete the Kapala, they may yet reclaim his wisdom, his ambitions, and the lost path to Rakshasa supremacy.

Karnak, one of the Gold-Marked Lords of the Kashmala, has made this his life’s purpose. He has studied ancient texts, followed half-buried prophecies, and shed blood in the pursuit of Saudasa’s remains. Now, his path has led him to Camp Immortal and the Splintered Tomb, where he believes the King’s skull still endures.

But Saudasa’s defiance did not go unanswered.

Name and Purpose of the Structure

Name: The Emerald Throne Citadel
Purpose: Once a seat of rakshasa power, the Emerald Throne Citadel was a magnificent bastion of arcane and psionic power. Hidden beneath a veil of illusion, it was both a temple to Rakshasa deities and a center for the political and military dominance of their kind. The asteroid strike that obliterated it was seen by some as divine retribution, though survivors wove their own mythologies around the event.

The Rakshasa Sorcerer

Name: Dvaarash Karnak
Backstory: A cunning and ambitious sorcerer who specializes in illusions and enchantments. Dvaarash learned of the artifact from a forbidden rakshasa prophecy, spoken in riddles, passed through a secretive rakshasa cabal. These prophecies claimed the artifact would crown a rakshasa as the supreme ruler, uniting their fractured factions and challenging Ravana's dominance.
