Class: Ranger (Gloom Stalker)
Background: Outlander
Alignment: Neutral Good
Affiliations: The Telum, Advisor to Major Anna van Drakenhof
Enemies: Vexilar the Vile
Sidekick: Ravinsky, Halfling Rogue from Yaland (with a Russian accent)

Description:

Daan “Stonewind” van Daal is a seasoned ranger known for his expertise in guerrilla warfare and his mastery of the jungles surrounding Seregon. A respected member of The Telum, the druidic order dedicated to the city’s protection, Daan has earned a reputation for his tactical brilliance and deep connection to the wilderness. He knows of every location within 150 miles around the city, and his knowledge of the terrain has made him invaluable to both his druidic comrades and the city’s defenders.

Once a man who lived only for himself, Daan's priorities changed when he met Ilmadia Mianala, the Archdruid of the Telum. He fell deeply in love with her, though her emotional unavailability has left him longing for a connection that remains out of reach. Nevertheless, her mission of maintaining the balance between nature and civilization has become his own, and he now fights not just for survival, but to uphold the delicate harmony Ilmadia seeks to preserve.

Appearance:

Daan van Daal is a tall, lean man with weathered features that speak of countless days spent in the wilderness. His dark hair, often tousled by the wind, frames his sharp, gray eyes, which seem to constantly assess his surroundings with quiet calculation. His attire is practical, consisting of dark green leathers that blend seamlessly with the jungle, and his long cloak, fastened with a silver clasp shaped like a leaf, flows behind him as he moves. A finely crafted longbow rests across his back, along with a pair of well-worn scimitars at his hips, tools of his trade as a warrior who thrives in the shadows.

Though his appearance is often rough, there is a quiet elegance in his movements, and he carries himself with the kind of confidence that only comes from being truly at home in the wild.

Personality:

Daan is a man of contrasts. On the one hand, he’s a skilled ranger who thrives on the edge of danger, using the land’s natural defenses and his cunning to strike from unexpected angles. On the other, he is driven by a deep and quiet love for Ilmadia, whose presence has transformed him from a solitary survivalist into a protector of Seregon’s delicate balance. His confidence sometimes borders on cockiness, but it is backed by genuine competence and a clear understanding of the terrain and threats the city faces.

While he is fiercely independent and values freedom, Daan has grown into a man who understands the importance of responsibility. His years of experience in the wild have given him a pragmatic view of life—he knows not every battle can be won, and he is careful not to send people to their deaths without good reason. His tactical mind is always working, planning the next move, and while he may seem aloof at times, Daan cares deeply for the people of Seregon and the natural world he protects.

Skills and Combat Style:

Daan is a master of guerrilla tactics, relying on stealth, surprise, and hit-and-run strategies to defeat his enemies. He excels in ambushes and silent strikes, using the jungle to hide his movements while outmaneuvering his opponents. His knowledge of the landscape allows him to set traps, create diversions, and disappear before his enemies can react. He is a skilled hunter and tracker, with a sharp eye for spotting threats long before they become problems.

  • Favored Terrain: Jungle
  • Weaponry: Longbow, dual scimitars, traps, and poisons
  • Tactical Expertise: Ambushes, hit-and-run attacks, using the terrain to control the battlefield
  • Survivalist: Expert in tracking, foraging, and navigating treacherous environments

Relationship with Ilmadia Mianala:

Daan's feelings for Ilmadia Mianala run deep, though the relationship is complicated by her emotional distance. Ilmadia’s focus on maintaining balance between the forces of nature and civilization has left her with little time for personal connections, much to Daan's frustration. He loves her fiercely, but her inability to reciprocate fully has become a source of quiet heartache. Despite this, Daan's loyalty to her and her mission remains unwavering. Her diplomatic efforts to prevent conflict in the world are, in his eyes, vital to survival, and he supports her work in his own way—by protecting the city as best he can.

Role in Seregon:

Though he prefers the solitude of the jungle, Daan serves as an advisor to Major Anna van Drakenhof, offering his expertise when it comes to the city's external defenses and the management of threats from the wilderness. However, he has little patience for the political maneuvering that accompanies his position, and often clashes with the Major’s more mercenary decisions. His primary allegiance is to the Telum and the natural world, and he frequently pushes back against political strategies that jeopardize the balance he and Ilmadia work so hard to maintain.

Despite this, Daan is well-respected by the Ithosian Talons and the Immortals of Karsis, both of whom appreciate his practical approach and undeniable skill in combat. He has saved many of their lives on more than one occasion, and his knowledge of the terrain has been critical in guiding them through dangerous operations.

Enemies: Vexilar the Vile

Daan has a personal vendetta against Vexilar the Vile, a shadowy wizard with dark ambitions who operates within the political underbelly of Seregon. Vexilar’s schemes to corrupt the city and bend it to his will are a direct threat to everything Daan holds dear, and the ranger has thwarted several of the wizard's plans, earning his eternal enmity. Vexilar’s manipulations often target the balance between nature and civilization, and Daan considers him one of the greatest dangers to the world Ilmadia is fighting to protect. The two have clashed on several occasions, and Daan remains ever-watchful for signs of the wizard’s next move.

Ravinsky – Halfling Rogue Sidekick

Daan's closest companion is Ravinsky, a halfling rogue from the Free Peasant Republic of Yaland. With his sharp wit and [Russian] accent, Ravinsky is the perfect complement to Daan's more serious demeanor. While Daan plans carefully and approaches problems methodically, Ravinsky is quick to improvise, often getting them out of tight situations with a clever word or quick sleight of hand. The two have a deep bond of friendship, forged through countless battles, and while Ravinsky may joke that Daan takes things too seriously, the halfling respects his ranger friend more than anyone.

  • Personality: Witty, resourceful, and always ready with a snappy comeback
  • Combat Style: Stealth, thievery, and sabotage
  • Accent: Russian
  • Quote: “ Daan, my friend, you always make things harder than they need to be. But I guess that’s why you have me, да?”
