COS 018 - The War For The Winery

Completed

From the balcony above, the wild-eyed druid pounced on Shakti while trying to entangle her in vines. However, Shakti was slippery, and evaded both her plant magic and following thunderwave as Shredder pounced. Atlas, having just killed a litany of blights, advanced and destroyed the druid with his spirit guardians. Ghalwin, meanwhile, began to bar more doors with whatever tools he had on hand, barricading with heavy barrels of wine. Atlas assisted, and barely blocked the door to the barrel maker's workshop in time to stop the blights from pouring in.

Shakti advanced up the balcony after hearing the sound of a door opening to her left; a fire druid emerged from the loading bay. He magically heated Shakti's scale mail then tried to run, attempting to bake her in her own armor. Lancelot was able to catch up to him, but he produced a blade of flame that severely burned our good boy before jumping down the bay into the vineyard. Shakti was able to see him running across the property, following the tide of blights. Unable to pursue, she ran through the upstairs bedrooms but did not find any further foes.

On the other side of the balcony, a berserker wielding a stone greataxe had run from the printing press to fight Shredder in the doorway. The barbarian was fighting a losing battle against the armored tiger while Atlas' spirit guardians ripped him to shreds, and he too frantically fled downstairs. There, Ghalwin had just finished blocking all the visible doors, and stood his ground to rebuff the berserker. His friends caught up quickly and finished the job.

Having secured the fermentation room, Ghalwin listened to where the needle blight horde would enter. If they successfully breached the winery, the plants would undoubtedly surround and kill them all. He quickly devised a plan of strength and self-sacrifice; he would beat back the horde with Lance's assistance, as Atlas and Shakti provided support. Here, Ghalwin made his stand, and produced his finest hour; withstanding over 70 attacks and five rounds of grapple checks, he beat back the tides of evil long enough for Atlas to work through them with his divine magic.

Shakti heard the fire druid attempting to pierce through the south door from the glass-blower's workshop. She left the plan to get her revenge; alongside Shredder, she morphed into a dire wolf, and the two oversized beasts tore the druid apart. They then rounded the outside and pincered the remaining blights, taking their attention and giving Ghalwin a bit of respite. With a last surge of adrenaline, the Pack destroyed the horde, and quickly re-secured the busted door before clearing out the rest of the winery. Upstairs in a child's room, they found a Blinsky toy of Strahd's Nightmare titled "Beucephalus The Wonder Horse", and Atlas found shipment details from the winery. Shipments were distributed to many communities of Barovia, including the Vistani camp, and up until the year 350 was also sent to Castle Ravenloft.

Atlas also found secret key in the bedpost in the master bedroom. The key lead to a chest of treasure, as well as Davian Martikov's locket with a picture of his dead wife. Atlas left them for now, and the Pack went downstairs. There, an enemy had been waiting for them; a Druid wielding a black staff launched a thunderwave as soon as they entered, bursting apart the glassworks. She cursed at them in druidic and sent blights to fight the party; however, an incensed Ghalwin teleported behind her, and the Pack easily routed the plants. Atlas took her staff, and Ghalwin manacled her, intent on keeping her alive for answers.

Shakti spoke druidic, so she questioned the druid and learned that she wielded a Gulthias Staff, constructed from a branch of a vampiric tree atop Yester Hill. There, many forest folk were building an effigy in Strahd's honor to appease him. She claimed that the forest folk attacked the winery because Barovians were godless, having forgotten the ways of the "Ladies Three." The druid identified these ladies as the Seeker of the Forest Fane, the Weaver of the Swamp Fane, and the Huntress of the Mountain Fane. The party was unable to get much more out of her as she kept spitting blood at them and Ghalwin kept striking her in return.

Eventually, they left her manacled in the cellar and went upstairs, where they found three wereravens waiting outside. Davian Martikov approached, his face looking a bit softer than he had earlier that evening. He told the Pack to follow him to the dining room, and gave Ghalwin his silver teapot; the two groups had "much to discuss".
