Wild magic zones were areas where the natural separation of the planes was damaged or distorted. In such areas, a Spell could backfire upon its caster, target the wrong location, be dramatically increased in power, or be fundamentally altered. Known areas affected in this way were marked with a sigil denoting the area's danger, and could be detected as giving off a faint white magical energy. Wild magic generally occurred in the natural environment, but sometimes would manifest in living creatures.
Not all wild magic was limited to a specific area; at times, it could be carried via winds or waters, resulting in tempests of destructive energy called "Magic Storms". Often containing the entropic power of Negative Energy and Positive Energy, or chaotically linked to the Elemental Realms, the effects of these storms were completely unpredictable. At times, such surges were harmless, changing the colour of the clouds or rapidly creating plant life. However, they were usually extremely dangerous, with effects ranging from stopping time, summoning monsters, raining weapons, or enervating the souls of any living creature inside the storm.
Some scholars looked to access the power of wild magic zones by relinquishing some of the control exercised by conventional mages. These wizards accepted the fluctuating and sometimes chaotic results of their spells. They sought to create a "school" of wild magic similar to the fundamental Schools of Magic, but were generally regarded as hacks, gimmicks, and lunatics by other mages.
