COS 040 - Newly-Dead And Nearly-Wed

Completed

Finishing dinner at the Wizard of Wines, Ghalwin and Momeros successfully petitioned Davian to send scouts after Lancelot and Lydia Petrovna. They spent the evening drinking Purple Grapemash No. 3 and bonding as Mormeros prestidigitated the bitter liquor into something more palatable. The warlock got blasted with Pip Squeak and drunkenly stuffed him into a flower pot, and unwittingly became a "vacation home" for the newly-awakened mouse.

In the morning, Ghalwin began teaching Tobias how to forage as Ajuni turned provider and caregiver. Mormeros struck a deal with Davian: for a 50% stake in the Wizard of Wines, he would the bear the costs of production increases provided that the mists were lifted. Wishing to deliver Lydia's wedding dress to the Abbot, the party accompanied Adrian's cart on a wine delivery to Krezk, simply grateful to not be walking. On the way, they found a corpse in the middle of the road that appeared exactly like Ajuni. She melted into acid at Ghalwin's touch, and the sorceress was sure it was a message left by Strahd.

On Mormeros' evening watch, the recurring will-o-wisp attempted to get his attention. This time, he cast a vicious mockery at it, sending it away into the forest damaged in both undead body and spirit. The next morning, he and Tobias played a prank on the blind Ghalwin, imploring him to "TURN AROUND!" with a mental message. The paladin acted with surprising anger to the unforeseen mental contact and stormed off. Tobias ran after him, apologizing, and learned the reason for his reaction; Ghalwin opened up about Yrrga to the group, and he told them of the insidious Dark Powers that had caused friction among his old Pack and taken his eyesight.

On Tobias' watch the next evening, he overheard the sound of an ambush, and beat back dire wolves who were attacking what appeared to be an undead paladin of the Silver Dragon. The revenant took a bit of convincing to understand that Tobias was not Irsel Geoheart, but once cogent, identified himself as Sir Godfrey Gwilym. Godfrey explained that he and his fellow knights had sworn a vow to Captain Vladimir Horngaard, Godfrey's lifelong love, and were bound by a magic vow to stay in Barovia. He pleaded that the gnome convince Vladimir to relinquish his hatred and allow the Order to finally pass on. Wearing the armor of Argynvost himself, Tobias accepted the charge and returned to his friends.

The group encountered another corpse on the Old Svalich Road; about a half-day's journey from Krezk, a villager had been torn apart by wolves. Ghalwin lifted the body into his bag of holding and they continued on to the fortified walls, where they were greeted with suspicion but allowed in. Krezk's atmosphere was strangely anxious, but they were met by a joyful Dmitri Krezkov; the burgomaster's last son Ilya had come back from the dead two weeks ago. In The Pack's absence and overcome with grief, he and his wife Anna had dug up the boy's body and taken it to the Abbey. The Abbot was hesitant about restoring the boy to life, as his body had long decomposed, but was moved by Dmitri's grief and spent the night raising Ilya. The boy's recovery from death had been slow, but he was now running, conversing, and eating as he always had.

The burgomaster invited them to stay at his cabin in exchange for menial work. Ghalwin returned their found corpse to Dmitri, who was saddened but not surprised by the body. It belonged Costel Barbua man who had left the walled village to inquire about the missing shipments from the Wizard of Wines. Costel was the older brother and caretaker of the town shepherd Oleg; Dmitri was concerned what this meant for Oleg, as the shepherd was a simpleton who relied on Costel. After meeting with the jubilant baroness Anna and a shy-but-grateful Ilya, the party left to the Abbey.

Uneasy about the village's seemingly anxious atmosphere, they stopped by the edge of the village to interview a local. The farmer Eugenija Fidatovna explained why the villagers were on edge: as winter loomed, their sheep supply had been mysteriously dwindling. She explained that in Krez had a history with werewolves infiltrating the village, and Eugenija believed that a wolf was among them. She also did not trust Oleg Barbu to protect the sheep from a werewolf attack, as though the man was both kind and incredible at herding sheep, he was not of sound mind. Sussing out that Eugenija was popular amongst the people in Krezk, Momo and Ghalwin encouraged her to not warn the other villagers about the possible werewolves. As a gathering could alert them, it was best to instead to stay quiet and collect information.

Up the switchback to the Abbey, they interacted with its mongrelfolk guards Zygfrek and Otto Belview, before being lead inside by the chamberlain Clovin Belview. They found the flesh golem Vasilka in the main hall practicing her dancing, and The Abbot came down to greet them. The disguised deva immediately fixated on Ajuni, who he believed had a connection to the divine similar to himself. Ajuni, for her part, saw straight through the Abbot: she understood that while the angel truly believed that he had raised Ilya from the dead, his mind was too corrupt to understand his own methods. The boy likely had an illusion covering whatever The Abbot had substituted his flesh with, and certainly had not come back to life without cost. She requested to learn more about the history of the Morninglord in Barovia, and the deva provided her with tomes of religious texts native to the region.

With Ajuni's insight in mind, Ghalwin presented Lydia's wedding dress to the grateful Abbot, who was now adamant that Vasilka would save Barovia. Despite himself, Ghalwin hung onto his three "miracles" for the time being. He would need the bodies of his past companions to raise them, but before that, he needed to determine if The Abbot could truly bring them back at all. As dusk turned dark, the party headed down the switchback to a silent village below.
