Arcanaloths were scribes and Spellcasters native to the Lower Realms, belonged to the Yugoloth caste. Arcanaloths stood out among their kind for their focus on arcane knowledge, magical contracts, and planar negotiation. Unlike many of their yugoloth contemporaries, arcanaloths preferred to operate from behind desks, often serving as recordkeepers, emissaries, or secret-keepers for more powerful entities across the Lower Planes.
Physically, arcanaloths resembled humanoid Jackals, with elongated muzzles, pointed ears, and gleaming eyes that betrayed their intelligence. Their fur ranged from dusty brown to jet black, and their robes were typically ornate, woven with infernal symbols or enchanted thread. They spoke all known Languages and avoided violence unless cornered, or when diplomacy failed to serve their ambitions. Arcanaloths had innate telepathy and Truesight, making them extremely difficult to fool. In addition to these innate abilities, most had spellcasting ability rivaled that of archmages, and employed illusions, enchantments, and planar magic to suit their own ends.
Arcanaloths prized knowledge above all else and were known to guard magical secrets with extreme possessiveness. They trafficked in information as currency, often exchanging spells, rituals, or classified knowledge in return for influence or planar favor. Though bound by contracts, they routinely twisted language to suit their ends, and their agreements were notoriously dangerous to mortals who failed to read fine print.
