Mystery keys were distinguished from their mundane counterparts by a question mark, which was typically engraved into the head of the key. The keys reacted to certain metals in locks, and had a small chance of undergoing a Transmutation to fit any lock they were placed within. If successful, the key melted into the lock and opened it, though destroyed itself in the process.
