Moonstone was an opaque white feldspar known for the milky blue sheen it revealed when polished. It was most often cut as a cabochon and set into jewelry or devotional ornamentation. A typical stone held modest value, though its price rose sharply during periods of widespread arcane upheaval, when demand for its unusual properties increased. Moonstones were regarded as sacred by several lunar and love-aligned faiths, where they were offered in sacrifice, consecrated for ritual use, or interpreted as omens when discovered by chance.
Moonstones absorbed and held light, glowing faintly in darkness after nearby flames or lamps were extinguished. Powdered moonstone could be used as a substitute for certain non-organic Spell Components, particularly in workings that shaped barriers or redirected stored magical force. Tales claimed moonstone forced lycanthropes into animal form at a glance, but this proved false, despite its frequent use in charms meant to guard against their Curse; however, skilled Alchemist could take base moonstone and turn them into Waxing Moonstones, which had this legendary effect.
