Apparatus of Igna

The Apparatus of Igna was a specialized tunneling vehicle designed by the rock Gnome inventor Igna Tynn Nimblepipe Bifimp Giltpurple Flint for use in the Deepways  beneath Little Lockford. Built upon principles similar to the legendary Apparatus of Kwalish, the machine traded aquatic mobility for raw subterranean power. Its reinforced frame resembled a compact armored engine mounted upon heavy treads, with a massive rotating drill fixed to its front. Though inelegant compared to the crab-like Apparatus, the Igna's machine was purpose-built to endure crushing stone, unstable caverns, and the harsh conditions of underground excavation.

The contraption was large enough to carry six gnomes occupants within a cramped, airtight cabin accessible only through a reinforced rear hatch. Igna sealed this hatch with powerful arcane Abjurations, forcing would-be intruders to overcome both thick metal and magical protections to gain entry. Inside, a series of complex levers controlled the vehicle’s movement, drill assembly, lighting systems, and mechanical functions. The treads allowed the machine to travel steadily across stone and uneven terrain, while the primary drill could chew directly through solid rock, carving broad tunnels large enough for carts, miners, and supply caravans to follow behind.

Unlike the original apparatus, the machine was intended not for exploration beneath the sea, but for expansion into the unmapped depths below the Undermire. Its drill mechanism operated continuously while engaged, grinding through stone with deafening force and leaving smooth-walled passages in its wake. The apparatus could also reverse itself through newly carved tunnels using dedicated controls, an important feature in the narrow confines of subterranean excavation where turning around was often impossible. Entire tunnel networks were opened through its use, granting access to new mineral veins, forgotten ruins, and dangerous chambers deep beneath the settlement.
