The Motherlode stood at the edge of Smoldertown, serving as the favored gathering place for miners, foundry workers, Artificers, and off-duty militia alike. Built from dark basalt blocks and stained by decades of soot and furnace smoke, the tavern was moody but rarely quiet. Low tables of metal and Fungalwood crowded the taproom beneath continual-flame lanterns, with chairs made of discarded forge materials. The scent of hot metal, mushroom ale, and pipe smoke drifted constantly through the air, and the tavern was best known for its locally brewed drinks, particularly the Rubbleclub Classic mushroom beer and Oofenklanger's Finest whiskey.
Though rough around the edges, the Motherlode occupied an important place in the town's social life. Merchants and laborers often stopped there before heading home, and news from across Little Lockford tended to spread through the Motherlode long before it reached the town hall. Contracts were negotiated there, guild disputes settled there, and celebrations often continued until the streetlamps dimmed for the evening cycle.
