The Caves of Jhirkorro lay within the coastal cliffs of the northeastern Murkmire Marshlands, where a rocky promontory overlooked the Bay of Broken Tides. Their main cavemouth remained hidden from the sea by natural stone formations, making the complex difficult to locate without local knowledge. A concealed passage led from the caves to the bay, allowing small vessels to enter unseen, while another network of tunnels connected the caverns to a nearby river that wound through the marshes.
The cave system had been carved over countless ages by the action of water and shifting stone, creating a maze of chambers, flooded passages, and narrow tunnels. Freshwater springs, tidal pools, and deep sinkholes were scattered throughout the complex, supporting a wide variety of marsh life both above and below the surface.
According to local tradition, the Caves of Jhirkorro held great significance in the history of the Lizardfolk who would come to occupy it. Their oldest stories claimed that three Bronze Dragons had settled within the caverns in ages past, and that the first lizardfolk of the Sister Springs descended from them. Whether taken as literal history or sacred myth, the tale remained central to the identity of many marsh-dwelling lizardfolk.
The caves also marked the beginning of the "Trail of Scales", an ancient passage said to lead to the Sister Springs. The route had been protected by magical trials, hidden mechanisms, and enchanted guardians that tested those who sought to pass. Tradition held that only those judged worthy by the dragons' legacy could complete the journey and reach the sacred springs beyond.
