Rasmus is an ageless, elusive merchant who roams the feudal realm of Rivermond, offering arcane goods and rare curiosities to those with the coin—and caution—to deal with him. With a cart full of wonders and a past shrouded in mystery, he appears when least expected and vanishes just as suddenly. Those who trade with him are left with questions, wonder... and sometimes, curses.
Description
Rasmus presents himself as an old, eccentric merchant—but one whose sprightly demeanor and youthful charm clash oddly with his near two-century age. He is often seen arriving down a lonely road or standing at a forgotten crossroads, his bizarre cart or wagon drawn by a strange, fantastical beast not native to the mortal realm of Midora. His shop is an ever-changing, magical emporium that seems to manifest at will, a shifting space of trinkets, relics, and bound enchantments.
At his side is a silent, hooded Cyclops, a towering, wordless guardian whose presence inspires unease. The two share a seemingly unspoken bond, and the Cyclops rarely leaves Rasmus’s side.
He is known for his sudden arrivals and disappearances—one blink, and he may be gone. But while his comings and goings are unpredictable, his wares are always eclectic: enchanted items, cursed objects, talismans steeped in ancient history, and magical curiosities no ordinary craftsman could replicate.
Personality
Rasmus is enigmatic, clever, and unpredictable. His cheerful demeanor and friendly chatter mask a mind that’s constantly weighing every word, every gesture. He is a master bargainer, unrelenting in his prices and willing to outwait even the most stubborn haggler. His humor is dry and peculiar, his knowledge vast but often hinted at rather than spoken plainly.
Despite his mystery, there are moments of sincerity—particularly when discussing dangerous items or magical forces he deems truly vile. When cursed or manipulated, his whimsical mask cracks, revealing a cautious, burdened soul wary of his own power and past mistakes.
He does not easily trust, but those who earn his respect find him a powerful ally and a curious, if cryptic, companion.
Background
Rasmus’s origins are lost to time. He speaks little of his past, offering only cryptic remarks or false stories that change with each telling. What is known is that he has wandered Rivermond and its surrounding lands for nearly two hundred years, a solitary figure collecting magical items of great value—and even greater danger.
He is more than just a merchant. He is a craftsman and enchanter, capable of creating bespoke magical items by special request. Many speculate he was once a court wizard or a scholar of dangerous lore who abandoned a former life to atone—or hide—from something greater.
In 913 of the Fourth Age, he was encountered by the adventuring party known as The Travellers on their way to Windelcrest. They found him distraught, having been robbed of a chained tome from his collection. The party learned that the missing artifact was Volkrag's Book of Greed, a cursed volume with malevolent power. Tracking it to a lich’s lair, the Travellers reclaimed the book and returned it to Rasmus.
But suspicion followed. The party began to question why such a book had been kept, and how it had slipped from Rasmus’s possession. The truth emerged: the book had been subtly manipulating him. With the help of the paladin Bartimaeus Brightheart, they broke the curse’s hold over Rasmus. Shaken and regretful, Rasmus admitted the influence the book had exerted upon him.
Though grateful for their aid, he warned the Travellers of the tome’s lingering power. He allowed them brief access to study. As they parted ways, Rasmus thanked the group and assured them he would remain in touch should he require their aid again.
To this day, tales of Rasmus continue to ripple through the towns and cities of Rivermond. His name is spoken with both wonder and wariness. His collection—known only in hushed tones as the Volkrag Collection—is the stuff of legend, and his reappearance is often seen as a harbinger of strange times ahead.
