Conrad "Buck" Collins

Primogen

Born to a wealthy land-owning family in the Carolinas, struggled with the disparity he saw in the treatment of colonists and the British, and the colonists and the slaves. Conrad was studious and devout, as his parents wished, but he couldn't understand why some were treated horribly and then others were treated even worse. His questions were rebuffed as the family was staunchly pro-British, and only the merest hints of a Revolution were being uttered.

Eventually, Conrad grew old enough to start overseeing the work being done on the large plantation. While still barely a teen, he was in charge of dozens of slaves endeavoring in just as many activities. While his older brothers and father told him to simply employ a lash or whip to convince them to work, Conrad would only do so if being watched by one of the older family members. Instead, the young man smuggled them food, blankets, and medicine in an attempt to make their lives moderately survivable.

A few years pass and Conrad headed north to New York to attend University. He and his family were proud of his achievement, but Conrad did worry about the people he was leaving behind. Billy, the lead 'foreman', simply told him to do well.. and come back. Once Buck was in charge, he would be able to do whatever he wanted. Conrad had had three older brothers but one had died in a riding accident, one had been killed while serving in the local militia, and the other had died of the pox. This was why he was now headed to University in order to extend  his education and then take over the plantation.

While in New York, the talk of Revolution was everywhere..
so were abolitionists..
finally, there were people with whom he could speak openly. Buck was soon a common figure in the coffee and beer houses where other antagonists gathered, because of this he was often accosted by the British and their local supporters. But, due to his willingness to defend himself and his families position in the Carolinas, he was able to evade arrest.

In his third year of studies, war broke out. Buck was not going to be left to the sidelines and, while he could have joined a militia in New York, he traveled quickly back home. Once there, he helped found the Wake County Regiment. He refused a higher station than that of a Lieutenant, declaring that he was not versed in war and not fit to take a more substantial role. Buck would earn a higher rank.
Conrad spent the next several years fighting and eventually earned the rank of Colonel. Unfortunately, towards the end of the war he was gravely wounded in his right leg. He refused to allow the wound to keep him from command till the war officially ended. Eventually, he returned home and regained full use of his wounded limb. After the war ended, and he convalesced, he was able to convince his father to free the slaves on their plantation.
They built up the housing the former slaves had lived in and eventually sold the various properties off to those that stayed.
Tragedy struck a couple years later when his father died of the flu. Buck officially took control of the plantation. Freeing the slaves had also freed up the capital required to their care. He found it much cheaper to pay them, at a decent wage, than it was to keep them in bondage. Output and quality of their goods increased, and Buck invested profits into his work force so that they could open their own businesses.

The success of his land drew the attention of creatures living in Charleston and his lands were visited by them. One claimed to be interested in cotton, and other goods from the area, but was actually a Ventrue in search of new territory. The Ventrue ghouled Buck and, through Conrad, reset many of the programs that had been running for years. The freedmen were ousted from their homes and new slaves were brought in. Their treatment was particularly cruel and many died under the fangs of the Ventrue and its associates.

The Ventrue that had ghouled Conrad, and taken over his plantation, had actually been fleeing an Elder Brujah. It had taken the Elder a few years but he had finally found his quarry. Buck was forced to fight the Brujah so his Regent could escape.. Obviously, Conrad lost the fight. However, the Brujah had heard of this plantation and the various endeavors of its owner. As Buck lay on the ground bleeding, he merely asked that his people not suffer. He wanted the blacks on his land to have their freedom and to leave, unmolested.

The Brujah is impressed and sires Buck. Buck frees his people, but knows he can no longer run the plantation.. he helps them escape to the North after freeing them. He knew that if they remained they could just be resold.

Buck then joined his sire in Raleigh, a Brujah held city, and was distraught to find that more than half of them supported slavery. Here, Conrad received a crash course in history, politics, and Camarilla politics. Conrad took every opportunity to agitate pro-slavery Kindred, especially those of his own clan and the Ventrue. His time in Raleigh couldn't last, he made too many enemies, so his Sire gave him his freedom and Buck fled to Florida. He created a haven in Northern Florida and began aiding escaping slaves deep into Indian territory where they would be free.

It was on one of these expeditions that he came across Elias. The young man was taking a wanted individual back north to face justice. Buck learned that Elias didn't approve of slavery.. but since it was the law, there was little he could do other than talk. Conrad embraced him and gave him a chance to actually make a difference.

a couple of decades later, another war broke out. This one pitted brother against brother.. a nation versus itself. Elias and Buck do their best to sabotage Confederate efforts in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina along with other Kindred sympathizers. They were delighted to burn down plantation after plantation, leaving their owners staked in the fiery buildings.

Decades pass.. and Buck takes his family to SE Florida in an attempt to build a Brujah utopia. He wished to create a land free of the commonly found hatreds and beliefs. The newly founded city of Miami, was this opportunity and Conrad seized at it. Unfortunately, other kindred also settled into the area and they had much deeper pockets. First, it was a group of Ventrue.. and then a small number of Toreador.

His dreams of having a land bereft of the hate found in the south was disappearing and he grew bitter. This bitterness grew bolder and deeper and broader as the years went by with Elias often scrambling to make amends for his Sires actions and statements. Conrad is now seen as a throwback.. a disgusting epitome of the Old South. His clan is fractured between three main factions..
those that follow him..
those that follow another Brujah named Monohan..
and a Brujah Anarch..

the clan was weak and the internal conflicts kept them from taking any real role in the city.
