Session 005: The Battle of Tresendar Manor

April 28, 2025

← Previous Session: Session 004: Confronting the Redbrands

1 Tarsakh 1471,  (Day 6)

Afternoon

  • "Rig" opens the door to Glasstaff’s Quarters and sees Iarno Albrek sitting at his desk, waiting for them.
  • Iarno "Glasstaff" Albrek proposes a deal to The Party: leave him to run the Redbrands as he sees fit and they are free to take Persi and 200 GP and leave
    • Iarno plans to take full control of Phandalin, installing himself as secret Lord of the town
      • Phandalin would remain as a representative oligarchy
      • Iarno is arranging to have a local farmer, Gonth Windshard, elected Townmaster, who would ultimately enact and enforce laws made by Iarno
      • The Redbrands would serve as a military and police force to provide protection, law, and order
      • Sees this as a fulfillment of his mission from the Lords' Alliance – to bring peace, prosperity, and order to Phandalin
      • Claims to have been weeding out the more violent and uncontrollable members of The Redbrands to make them into a more professional force
      • Iarno killed the previous leader of The Redbrands with a lightning bolt spell
        • Previous leader: Suseid “The Asp” Burshi – Calishite mercenary and brigand
        • Redbrands were previously ruthless, violent, and evil but Iarno was attempting to “re-educate” the gang
    • Sildar is livid at Iarno’s betrayal of duty and arrogance in thinking he is “deserved” rulership of Phandalin due to his noble heritage as the son of Waterdeep Lord
      • Wants to take Iarno into custody to return to Waterdeep for trial
      • Recognizes in his anger, he may kill Iarno instead, so he leaves it to The Party to decide what to do
  • Vala detects strong Abjuration magic emanating from the black Glass Staff
  • "Rig"  believes that the townsfolk of Phandalin are weak, cowardly, ineffectual, unwilling to stand up for or labor for their own self-interests
    • Sees the merit in having a strong and decisive leader have full control of Phandalin and its people
    • Feigns accepting the deal to deal a Surprise Attack to Iarno
    • Iarno becomes invisible and tries to escape but runs into Orthanc on the other side of a secret door in the back of his quarters
  • The Party quickly chases down Iarno – Orthanc lops off one of his arms and Iarno unceremoniously bleeds to death
    • Sildar expresses that he regrets not doing the noble, just thing and bring Iarno back to Waterdeep to stand trial for the Lords' Alliance – however, he is not disappointed that Iarno is dead
  • Vala obtains Iarno’s black Glass Staff – she identifies it as enchanted with abjuration magic
  • Rig seems to be very adamant about giving Slûûp “tasks” to do – perhaps reinforcing his assumption that The Party are his new “Masters”
  • The Party enters a crypt with 3 sarcophagi and 3 skeletons – the skeletons come alive and battle with The Party
    • Rig searches the sarcophagi and finds a platinum signet ring with the symbol of a large, spreading oak tree – the same symbol on the walls of the crypt
  • The Party finds a prison room with two cells, in the cells are PersiGrista and her son, Gristar; Mirna Dendrar and her two teenage children, and the sex workers from The Sleeping Giant
    • Grista tells The Party she’s been caring for Persi, who seems to be healthy but cannot be awoken
    • The Party leaves the captives in the prison room while they clear out the rest of the Redbrand Hideout
  • "Rig" and Vala fall into a pit trap, taking some damage – The Party manages to get across the pit using some rope and elbow grease
  • "Rig" finds Iarno’s Oilskin drybag with a Potion of Lesser Healing and an ink black potion in a clear glass bottle. She shares the contents and keeps the bag.
  • The Party returns to the prison room after hearing a suspicious sound and finds the Nothic
    • It says it had “tasted” of the frightened children and plans to devour them, because the fear of the young is the most delectable
    • Grista holds a spear, protecting the sleeping Persi
    • Gristar charges the Nothic with a spear, missing his attack, but getting it’s attention before it started feeding on the children
    • The Nothic uses its devastating Rotting Gaze ability on Gristar, who passes out after becoming severely injured by sudden necrotic wounds
    • The Party spreads out, surrounding the Nothic, and dispatching it as a team like a bunch of fucking badasses
    • The Party receives XP
  • "Rig" heals Grym from his severe wounds but then immediately criticizes the Phandalin townsfolk for not taking the initiative and getting themselves out of the Redbrand Hideout and back to town
    • Orthanc argues that the townsfolk are injured and traumatized and that even at the best of health, it would be dangerous for them to wander the dungeon alone
  • Vala extracts 2 vial of vitreous humor from the Nothic eye – useful for alchemy/potion making

Evening

  • The Party reunites with Slûûp, who collected and categorized the loot from defeating enemies in The Redbrand Hideout
  • Vala searches the Alchemy Workshop and finds:
    • the book Unknown: a journal of an adventurer who found a copy of The Wonders of Phandalin and copied down some of the information from it
    • Vial of quicksilver
    • Vial of reddish-black liquid
    • Vial of dark green powder
    • Potion of Invisibility being brewed, requiring 4 hours of work to complete
  • Vala searches Glasstaff’s Quarters:
    • 5 orangish-red gems, 2 light green gems, 1 pearl
    • Scroll of Charm Person
    • Scroll of Fireball
    • Correspondence between Iarno and The Black Spider
  • Sildar Hallwinter escorts the rescued captives back to Phandalin while The Party takes a long rest
