Enna Baenre

Dread Lord of Waterdeep

The Amethyst Wyrmspeaker, Dread Lord of Waterdeep, Whisperblade of the Zhentarim

“There is no such thing as mercy—only leverage.”

Among the most enigmatic and dangerous figures of the Contemporary Era stands Enna Baenre, a name whispered with a mixture of reverence and fear throughout the Realms. Born into the cruel intrigue of Menzoberranzan, Enna is a 125-year-old dark elf whose path to power is carved in subterfuge, sharpened steel, and the rarest commodity in Velkarn—perspective. She is the current Dread Lord of Waterdeep, the City of Splendors and the head of its largest-ever sect of the Zhentarim.

Origins in Shadow

Enna's earliest days are known only through fragmented accounts and speculative records. She fled her noble house in Menzoberranzan under circumstances left purposefully vague—though it is widely believed she was marked for sacrifice to Lolth. Caught by surface Zhentarim agents during her escape, she was given a choice no one should ever face: servitude or slaughter. She chose the former, a decision that would bring her from the dark caverns of the The Underdark to the heart of Velkarn’s political web.

Biography

Rogue Ascendant

As a soulknife, Enna is a master of psionic weaponry, manifesting psychic blades of unimaginable sharpness and lethality. Her appearance—ebony skin, shock-white hair, and violet eyes nearly luminescent with strain—is as commanding as it is haunting. She wears a dark cloak over muted studded leather, optimized not for intimidation but for disappearance. Enna does not rely on brute endurance; she ensures she is never where her enemies strike.

Yet, it is not merely her prowess in battle that makes her formidable. Her intelligence is piercing, her charisma disarming, and her patience vast. It is said she can convince a noble to sell their title and make them thank her for the transaction.

The Cult, the Council, and the Wyrmspeakers

Enna’s life changed irrevocably when she encountered the adventuring band known as the "The Five Guys" during her covert investigations into the Cult of the Dragon. Disguised as a moon elf, she aided them during their dismantling of the Cult of the Dead Three in Unknown. Upon intercepting a sending that foretold the city’s imminent destruction, she persuaded the Five Guys to evacuate their allies—an action that saved countless lives.

Enna later represented the Zhentarim at a secretive prelude to the Council of Waterdeep, advocating cooperation against the rising threat of Severin the Crimson Hand. Her temporary alliance with the adventurers culminated in her receiving a dragon mask—infused not with chromatic malice, but the psionic clarity of Sardior, the lost god of gem dragons. Thus was she named the Amethyst Wyrmspeaker, the first and only of her kind.

The Rise to Dread Lord

In the months that followed, Enna eliminated the previous Zhentarim leadership in Waterdeep through methods still classified by internal Zhentarim archives. Declaring herself Dread Lord, she began reordering the Zhentarim into a pragmatic, fearsome entity. During the final days of The War of Dragons, she facilitated a summit in Thay between the Five Guys and Galvan the Blue, hoping to fracture Severin’s inner circle. Though the betrayal she sought never materialized, her maneuvering led to the support of the Thayan Red Wizards—a critical moment in the campaign’s climax.

At the Battle of the Well of Dragons, Enna commanded Zhentarim squadrons and fought alongside the Metallic Wyrmspeakers. When the storm of Tiamat’s summoning broke, she vanished from the eyes of history.

The Shadow Returns

Following the war, Enna reappeared not in celebration, but in the folds of deepening secrecy. As Dread Lord, she solidified her hold over Waterdeep’s underworld, achieving a scale of influence the Zhentarim had never before known within the Jewel of the Sword Coast. Yet, her empire now teeters.

The return of Manshoon—long thought exiled or dead—has thrown her faction into conflict. This schism within the Zhentarim has ignited a cold war in the streets of Waterdeep, one fought with assassins, informants, magical pacts, and veiled diplomacy. Enna’s war is not one of armies but of secrets. And few know more secrets than she.

Legacy and Threat

It is rare that an individual ascends to such stature across so many spheres—arcane, martial, criminal, and political. Rarer still is the individual who survives the ascent. Enna Baenre is that rarity. And while the Realms may not sing her name in the open, in the hush of high towers and back alleys alike, all know to listen when it is spoken.

“History remembers the loud. Power remembers the quiet.” —Attributed to Enna Baenre, shortly after her rise to Dread Lord.
