Upon separation from the nation of Darna, the island became autonomous but not recognized. Facing threats of retaliation, the islanders cut off any communication with Caldar. Tieflings and criminals from all over the world, heard rumors of a paradise island between the two continents. Tieflings that experienced discrimination and constant scrutiny felt free there and exiled criminals had a second chance at life, without any laws above them now. Turmoil and chaos were a constant factor in the first decades of the island's autonomy. Criminal gangs, later known as "pirates", fought for power and the right to rule the island. The title of Pirate King or Queen kept passing around various individuals, way too often to allow the island to become stable. Pirate crews from there raided coastal areas on both continents, trying to amass wealth, to hire more crews and ships and fight for the Pirate King/Queen title. The cycle continued for many centuries.
Geography
The island features a tall mountain filled with caves and tunnels, in the middle. Around it, forests and few rivers span over the narrow piece of land. The large gulfs offer natural ports for large fleets, protecting them from the wild water surrounding the island. Some hallucinatory plants are known to only grow there, making this illegal good, an extra source of wealth for the pirate nation.
Government
The captain of the strongest pirate crew rules the island. Such rulers rarely live long enough. Death comes early, either by the hand of another, the sea or their reckless lifestyle. That continued until the early decades of the 4th era, when Queen Elmora, the Ruthless, became the ruler. Believed to be immortal, after many assassinations attempt that should have killed her. Her fame of immortality was further bolstered by her unnaturally long lifespan. Under her reign, the largest pirate fleet was amassed, surpassing the naval forces of the Unknown and becoming a major problem for coastal nations and sea trade. Her sudden disappearance in the 2nd half of the 4th era, plunged Blackden into chaos, reverting the island back to the endless cycles of killings for power.
Demographics
About 50% of the residents are Tiefling people, descendants of the original citizens, back when the island was part of Darna. The rest is divided amongst all kinds of criminals.
