Yokai

Yokai, once a nightmare given form, is the Blood-King of the Oni, a violent and demonic race born from dark dreams and malice. His origins lie in the dream realm, a dimension that manifested from the collective nightmares of the Y'azi Y'azi Dragonborns. For centuries, he terrorized the mortal realm from the shadows, particularly plaguing the Sakura Spirit Woods, where he sought to cast the spirits of the woods (Hengeyokai) into an eternal slumber. His presence threatened to snuff out the vibrant life of the Sakura woodlands, slowly corrupting the forest with his malintent.

It was only through the combined efforts of the revered monks Master Shen Agatsu and Master Orochi Agatsu that Yokai was banished. They wielded the elemental forces of wind and lightning, channeling the power of Fujin and Raijin to imprison Yokai in the Faewyld, a realm far removed from the mortal plane. Bound by powerful magic, he remained trapped in the wild, chaotic energy of the Fae for many years. In his time here, he joined the Court of Wither and assumed the mantle of Archfey.

However, Yokai's banishment was not permanent. During the catastrophic event known as the Conjunction of the Realms, when the boundaries between dimensions weakened, Yokai was freed from his prison. Though no longer in the Faewyld, his newfound freedom was short-lived. The risen Primarchs, Losk the Wanderer and Kairus the Brass, powerful champions serving Prometheus, defeated Yokai in battle. They enslaved him, forcing him into servitude to further their own ambitions. Bound to their will, Yokai was made to serve the Primarchs of the Sun until a fateful event occurred—the Mask of The Oni, a powerful artifact tied to his essence, was fractured. The mask’s destruction shattered his very soul, splintering it into five primal aspects of negative emotion: Anger, Envy, Sorrow, Despair, and Hatred.

These fractured emotions became the embodiment of Yokai's power, and though he was broken, his spirit was not entirely destroyed. He was eventually reincarnated within the Sakura Forest, returning to the land he once sought to corrupt. However, his existence was now tied to the fragmented aspects of his soul, each representing a powerful force of negative emotion.

In this form, Yokai resides within the Dojo of Dreams, a twisted and infinite dream dimension that he calls home. The Dojo of Dreams is a vast, unending labyrinth of martial halls and blood-soaked tatami mats, where the Oni are born and nurtured by demonic magic. From this domain, Yokai sends forth his Oni to plague the nightmares of the Y'azi dragonborns and hengeyokai, corrupting their dreams and feeding off their fears. His Oni serve as conduits for the emotional devastation he thrives on, spreading chaos across the realms whenever they pass from the dream realm into reality.

While he may have been enslaved by the Primarchs, and his soul fractured by the Mask of the Oni, Yokai remains a dangerous and malevolent force. Though bound to the Dojo of Dreams, his influence extends far beyond it, and his hatred for the Agatsu brothers and all who stand in his way continues to burn, waiting for the day he can fully reclaim his power and terrorize the realms once again.

His end was as dramatic and fractured as his soul, brought about through battles waged across both the Dream Realm and the Prime Plane. His final defeat not only liberated the spirits of the Akai Forest but also ensured the Blood-King’s terror would never rise again.

The Battle in the Dream Realm

After the death of Prometheus within the Promythean, Yokai regained his freedom and began corrupting the Sakura Woods of the Akai Forest. His fractured essence, split into five primal aspects of negative emotion—Anger, Envy, Sorrow, Despair, and Hatred—manifested in the Dojo of Dreams, his nightmare-laden domain in the Dream Realm.

The Sunsations -- entrusted by Hoshiko -- to restore balance to the Akai Forest, ventured into the Dojo of Dreams. Each fractured aspect of Yokai’s soul represented a grueling trial, testing the party's resolve and unity:

Anger burned with unrelenting fury, forcing the Sunsations to battle waves of Oni warriors.
Envy sought to turn the adventurers against one another, preying on their insecurities and ambitions.
Sorrow created illusions of their greatest regrets, sapping their willpower.
Despair unleashed a labyrinth of hopelessness, blinding their path forward.
Hatred culminated in a final confrontation, where Yokai’s true essence tried to reclaim its splintered form.

Through sheer determination and unity, the Sunsations triumphed, shattering Yokai’s fractured emotions and weakening his influence over the Dream Realm.

The Final Blow on the Prime Plane

With his essence scattered and power waning, Yokai’s physical form was forced into the Prime Plane, where he became a shadow of his former self. He attempted to regain strength by tightening his grip on the Sakura Woods, corrupting the sacred grove and its guardian spirits.

It was here that the Sunsations met him for the final time. Kairus the Brass, wielding his mighty maul, confronted the Blood-King directly. Yokai, though weakened, fought with ferocity, but Kairus delivered the killing blow, shattering Yokai’s physical form and banishing his existence once and for all.

Legacy of Terror

Yokai’s demise marked the liberation of the Sakura Woodlands and the restoration of balance to the Akai Forest. His influence over the Dream Realm faded with his destruction, freeing countless spirits from the torment of his fractured emotions.

The battle against Yokai has become a cautionary tale among the Hengeyokai and Y'azi Dragonborn, a reminder of the dangers that dwell in both the Dream Realm and the hearts of those who fall to malice and despair.
