The Atlan Atrocity

Arcane Genocide

The Atlan Atrocity marks one of the darkest chapters in the history of the underwater city of Atla. What began as a concerted defense against a mind-flayer infection spiraled into an unfathomable disaster, bringing death and destruction to thousands of innocents. The catastrophe was precipitated by the infection of a Triton Warrior, Asarion, during a clash with Sahuagin raiders. As the infection took hold and ceremorphosis began, Eldar Court members Castiel Ularen and Nualia Laren faced the agonizing decision to eliminate Asarion to prevent his transformation into an Illithid. Unbeknownst to them, this event would become the harbinger of chaos that soon engulfed Atla.

In the midst of escalating panic and chaos, Brick, a member of The Sunsations, resorted to a drastic measure. Turning to a forbidden page in his necromancy tome, he cast a vile Circle of Death upon the epicenter of the city. The spell's necrotic energy unleashed a wave of death, indiscriminately eviscerating not only the Illithid spawn but also hundreds of Triton warriors and thousands of innocent Atlan civilians. This act inadvertently weakened the city's defenses, ultimately leading to the waning protection of the water wall around Atla. The Atlan Atrocity opened the floodgates for the Sahuagin, who seized the opportunity to invade the now-vulnerable city. The coordinated attack, orchestrated by the Coven of the Pearl and Illithid spawn, capitalized on the chaos Brick's spell created.

In a fit of rage and grief over the devastation wrought upon his people, Castiel attacked Brick, seeking retribution. However, this conflict took a more tragic turn when Shanara the Salamander, in a bestial and feebleminded state, brutally killed Castiel, unbeknownst to her that Nualia Laren, Castiel's childhood friend and lover, witnessed the entire ordeal.

In the chaos, Archmage Kelak Nilfard would come to the Sunsations aid as he reversed gravity under the sea and drove the horde of Sahuagin into confusion, giving the fleeing Atlans time to find refuge in the Unknown. After hours of sheltering, they would hear cataclysmic commotion outside, before silence permeated... Moments later, the entrance to the temple would open as an enraged Typhon descended upon his coral throne and imparted judgement upon the sunsations. He would be dissuaded from their immediate execution by Kelak in exchange for their help defeating the World Eater Serpent and their immediate banishment from the Sea Realm thereafter.

The Atlan Atrocity remains a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked power and the unintended consequences of desperate actions. It stands as a testament to the fragile balance between defense and the value of life, marking a somber chapter in the history of Atla and The Sunsations. The incident not only reshaped the physical and political landscape of Atla but also left deep emotional scars on its survivors, forever altering the course of lives and destinies.
