Long believed slain by the mighty Avatar Vapora and Paramount Thoryn in the Third Age, the World Eater Serpent—an ancient leviathan of abyssal origin—returned in the shadows of the Fifth. Its body, reconstituted and undead, had become the vessel of a hive-mind parasite—an elder brain birthed within the ruins of Abythis, nesting now in the abyssal trench beneath the tides.
Signs of its return were subtle at first: emboldened Sahuagin raids across Atla's western reefs, whispered reports of Illithid activity near Ship's End and Triton patrols going missing. Yet, none could ignore the truth when the screams echoed unseen from the deep. Avatar Typhon, Avatar of the Sea, was not spared these omens. Infected memories and desperate prayers from his people drove him to a frenzy. Manipulated by the ancient Coven of the Pearl, a secretive sect of former Eldar councillors, he sought to annihilate the Sahuagin once and for all—and in doing so, fell into the Serpent’s snare.
Spiral into Madness
The Penitent Pearl, a relic whispered to grant divine absolution in the form of a wish, had long been the object of the Coven’s obsession. Twisting Typhon’s fears into fury, they convinced him to wage war not only against the Sahuagin, but also upon The Sunsations who bore the guilt of The Atlan Atrocity—a mass necrotic incident sparked by Brick’s use of forbidden magic that had shattered the city’s defenses and slaughtered innocents.
Enraged and grieving, Typhon returned to the Avatar's Temple amidst the chaos, dragging the corpses of Sahuagin warbands and infected Atlans alike in his wake. There, he cast judgment upon the Sunsations, offering a cruel ultimatum: join him in Abythis to slay the reborn Serpent and then be exiled forever from The Sea Realm.
The Descent to Abythis
With little choice given, the Sunsations accepted. They then plunged into the deep trenches of Abythis, slaying wave after wave of Sahuagin war bands and deep-sea horrors. Within the trench, they encountered Vidarr Lonestorm—bastard son of Vapora and Thoryn—who had long hunted deep-sea leviathans alone after being cast from Utgard. Vidarr revealed the Serpent’s power had turned the Storm Giants of Utgard to stone, even poisoning his father’s mind after vidarr's half-brother / half-sister had perished in battle against the serpent, with their severed heads returned by the beast as a cruel jest.
Guided by Vidarr through the ruins of Utgard, they reached the Palace of the Paramount, only to face an enthralled Thoryn, corrupted by the parasite’s voice and adorned with the cursed Valar Crown of King Athelstan Valarion. A brutal fight ensued, during which Edward O'Bannon shattered the crown and restored his Valar lineage, but not before Thoryn slew Freya Stormbreaker, casting her into the abyss.
Slaying the Serpent
No sooner had Thoryn broken free than the Serpent emerged. Vast and grotesque, its corpse was puppeteered by the Elder Brain nested deep within its rotting skull. Giant Flayers—storm giants riddled with illithid parasites—poured in from the shattered dome, triggering a war on three fronts.
Summoning the ancient dragon turtle Mythia, Typhon rallied his strength. The Sunsations were joined by Guy the Grateful, Septimus Lucien, and Haellae Colaerth, who Rifted in under Archmage Kelak Nilfard’s spell. Together they battled the Serpent’s endless coils, breaking its hold over the sea.
Septimus, wielding his reaper’s blade, severed the serpent’s soul from its flesh and banished it to the Plane of Oblivion, revealing the squirming Elder Brain within. Mythia, with a deafening cry, incinerated it in a beam of concentrated water. Victory was earned—but not without cost. Thoryn, Anvel Tyrson, and Freya were dead. Edward fell when the Serpent cursed him in a long-forgotten tongue, uttering a Word of Death that stilled his heart forever.
Legacy
Vidarr, wounded yet unbroken, would go on to restore his people's legacy stone-by-stone. The Palace began slow restoration, but the scars of the battle would never fade. Kelak, deeply grieved by the loss, led the Sunsations to The Earth Realm to bury Anvel Tyrson. Typhon departed with them, his rage replaced by solemn purpose (see: Tribute to the Fallen).
The Wrath of the World Eater was not merely a battle—it was a revelation. A warning of how even divine strength can be twisted by fear. It ended one cycle of destruction, but also exposed the threads of greater manipulation at work beneath the sea and sky... Of the Revenant Titans legacy.
