Wolves were Beasts found in a wide range of climates, most commonly in colder forests, alpine slopes, and high plains. They avoided deserts, swamps, and dense jungles, but otherwise adapted well to most environments where prey was available. Packs often established territories near large game trails or river valleys where their prey of smaller mammals were abundant.
A typical pack included five to ten members and was structured around a dominant breeding pair. These packs worked together to patrol territory, raise young, and hunt. Their tactics emphasized coordination and stamina, often wearing down prey over long distances rather than relying on speed or strength. Lone wolves, often exiled or searching for new territory, were known to travel vast ranges and behaved more unpredictably.
Wolves relied heavily on their acute senses. Their hearing and smell were highly developed, allowing them to detect prey or danger long before it was seen. Their fur protected them from cold, wind, and moderate rainfall, and they remained active in conditions that deterred many other predators. Their bite was strong enough to bring down large ungulates, and their endurance let them track wounded prey for hours or even days.
Though wolves generally avoided Mortalkind settlements, they were known to approach livestock or roads during harsh seasons or when natural prey became scarce. Some rural cultures saw them as dangerous, while others viewed them as symbols of loyalty or natural balance. While difficult to domesticate, wolves raised from pups could sometimes be trained as companions, though they remained more aggressive and independent than their Dog cousins.
