COS 014 - A Guiding Hand

Completed

As Jarmo stood statuesque and Ireena was captured, the remaining members of the Pack did not have time to properly grieve. Ghalwin told Shakti to collect Jarmo's affects, while he ran north with Lancelot to heal Izek Strazni. The man was thankfully still breathing, and Ghalwin restored some of his vitality; the devilish henchman was confused but thankful, and the two dashed to find the remaining vampire spawn.

Meanwhile, a newcomer to Vallaki named Atlas Atruvian was spending his first morning in town. Haunted by a mysterious past, he had come to Barovia intentionally, traveling the Old Svalich Road toward Castle Ravenloft. He knew little of this place, only that his goddess Umori had tasked him with righting the evils of the land. He spoke to the pastor of the town's church, Father Lucian, who informed him that other travelers had recently come to Vallaki; the pastor  believed them to be scions of the Morninglord.

The next day, Atlas heard screams outside his stableroom provided by a sympathetic townsperson. He ran out to find that the commotion was caused by a Vampire Spawn, let loose and murdering innocents in the streets. It spotted him, and realizing the battle would be tough alone, he turned invisible; however, he was instructed by a nearby raven to lead the spawn inside an unlocked house. Atlas reappeared and did what he was told, and engaged with his vicious foe. Aided by a butt-naked wereraven, Atlas invoked Umori's radiance and blasted the hell out of the spawn while Lazlo Lazarescu restrained it. As Strahd's thrall turned to run, Lazlo killed it with a dagger throw.

After a quick explanation, they turned to go to the square, but Lazlo decided to hide when he saw Izek. Noticing this, Ghalwin let Izek run ahead by feigning injury, and met with Atlas and Lazlo. They informed the paladin that the last spawn had been killed. Ghalwin told them what had happened in the square, and they went back to collect Shakti. They they headed to the Inn, only occupied by Brom and Bray, and had a drink while re-heating an abandoned stew. Shakti and Ghalwin got to know Atlas, who informed them of his mission, and showed them his Planar Compass.

They decided that this cleric of twilight was trustworthy, and eventually Urwin and Danika re-entered their establishment. A quick conversation with Urwin reminded Ghalwin that the church was still unconsecrated, and the Pack doubled back to Father Lucian who opened the altar's secret door. There, Ghalwin said a short prayer and reconsecrated the area, while resting Jarmo's maul along with Saint Andral's remains.

Desperate to keep active, Shakti began to prepare extra graves using earth magic while Ghalwin assisted Atlas with making holy water; in doing so, the old cleric remarked that he was also experienced with loss. After an hour or so, they went back to the Inn and investigated van Richten's room. There, they found the room empty save for a note indicating that, should they find an artifact, they could meet him at Khazan's Tower.

Realizing that van Richten had left his wagon, The Pack went to Arasek Stockyard and found it still there, along with the plated saber-tooth tiger. Ghalwin shook down Gunther Arasek by insinuating he would turn him in to the Burgomaster, and took Brokk's plate mail. Gunther still was unable to buy the necklace at full price, however, and suggested selling it to a wealthy noble.

Collectively deciding that there was no perfect way forward, the party went to pay a visit to Baron Vargas Vallakovich.
