Lief Lipsiege

Born in the Village of Barovia, Lief was a prodigy in math and numbers, and had an impeccable memory for names. Noticing this inherent talent, Count Strahd von Zarovich entered the village and charmed the boy to help keep the monetary ledgers for all of BaroviaLief was first brought to Castle Ravenloft as a teenager, and was quite adverse to giving up his life down in the Village; he had been taken away from his parents, friends, and life that he had known, however terrible it had been.

After numerous failed escape attempts, he lost hope of life outside of Strahd's service. Though he resented being forced into servitude, Strahd was always a gracious host to Lief, making sure he was well fed and comfortable. As the years turned into decades and the Vampire continued his manipulation, the bookkeeper became dependent on Strahd and took pride in his position. Mostly bored of conversing with Strahd's rotating Vampire Spawn spouses and mad staff, he developed a nervous psychosis. He tended to be overly formal and technical, but scattered in conversations.

Lief was able to recall the names, lands, and titles of the various homesteads of Barovia and their owners, down the smallest house in Vallaki. The numerous ledgers in his office were all the records of Barovia and its residents, the vast majority of which Lief wrote himself. He spent his days chained to his office chair, wiling over accounts and working directly with the Chamberlain Rahadin. He constantly complained that his ledgers could never be completed due to Strahd's unwillingness to share all of his secrets, but toiled diligently nonetheless.
