One Who Remembers

The One Who Remembers was thought to be a Myconid possessing the spirit of an Archfey wayshadowed in the Prime Material. Despite its immobility, it was the true will behind the Reaching Grove's strange expansion. It stood taller than any tree in the entire Grove, its cap covered in mossy overgrowth and pulsing with thick veins of purple magic. Under its cap, it seemed to possess twelve massive, unblinking eyes, though they did not move, seeming more decorative than functional. Despite its size, its presence could be felt before it was seen, in the thickening of air and the way sound seemed to dull near its root. When finally visible, its stalk was pitted and scarred, covered in thick cords of mycelium that rooted it into the ground.

The One Who Remembers was older than any Mycowood council and perhaps older than the forest itself, and though it did not speak in words, it shaped the dreams and thoughts of the entire forest around itMyconid Sovereigns, themselves long-lived rulers of the wood, deferred to the great fungus in all matters of colonial intent; it was thought to be focused on the long shaping of the forest’s future and the health of its many children, with intellect far greater than any mortal. The great cap did not hate or judge, but it did not permit interference, and any interlopers who approached with fire or blades were absorbed into the forest.

Built in a ring around Zuk'rayel's great base was Sporehome, the oldest and largest Myconid colony in the Mycowood. Residents lived in hollowed trunks of dead growths that leaned against the central stalk, their dwellings scraped smooth and lined with soft moss, or within the great cap that towered over the forest. Broad fungal shelves served as gardens and resting places for the inhabitants. A single Sovereign there acted as its interpreter, and guided the decisions of sovereigns from other colonies across the entire wood.
