Unknown to nearly all outsiders, the Mycowood sat at the center of the Reaching Grove, cut off from the sun by thick banks of poisonous spore-mist and the wide caps of towering mushrooms. Trees were rare in this place, replaced by fungal stalks the size of pillars not seen anywhere else in the Head of the Greatwyrm. Reds and purples glowed faintly even without sunlight under the canopy, the soil was spongy and damp, and the air was heavier than the rest of the Grove, laced with spore-mist that were toxic to most Mortalkind. The Mycowood followed no natural cycles, as some areas seemed frozen in bloom, while others constantly shed and regrew.

The edges of this strange forest were not only protected by these poisonous mists, but by Myconid Adult Rangers that watched the grove. These folk stewarded their home at the behest of other Myconids, who lived in quiet colonies beneath the largest caps and within hollowed trunks of old growths. Their society was organized around a council of Elthysi Sovereigns, each responsible for one spore colony and rarely seen beyond it. They ruled through shared memory and collective dreams, but their authority was not absolute.

While it was acknowledged that colonies were geographically independent, issues that plagued one colony were considered to similarly affect each other. All myconids, from the smallest sprout to the most bloated sovereign, deferred to the wisdom of the oldest colony, Sporehome. Sporehome was built around a single being buried deep in the wood: an ancient, immobile mushroom referred to as One Who Remembers, the One Who Remembers. Taller than any tree in the wood, the great fungus did not speak, but was believed to shape the thoughts of the entire forest around it.
