Kobbie Breagurd, better known around the docks as "Old Man" Breagurd, was a fixture of the Cliffsunder Grandport for longer than most could remember. A wiry, salt-worn fisherman with a voice like creaking rigging, he had a reputation for wasting his seemingly uncanny luck. Nets that came up empty for others swelled for him, and storms that wrecked neighboring boats passed him by with little more than a hard rain. Still, an ornery personality and a propensity for ale kept him from being anything more than a lonely fisherman, living aboard a small ship on the outskirts of Cliffsunder.
As a young man, Kobbie claimed to have caught a strange, shimmering fish no longer than a finger, its scales flashing with unnatural color. He mounted it on a plaque in his modest dining quarters and never spoke of it plainly again, but many in the village came to believe it was the source of his good fortune. Whether by magic or myth, he guarded it closely, trusting neither curious neighbors nor the whispers that followed him through the market. Old Man Breagurd was a cautious, solitary man who trusted routine over people; he kept odd hours, slept lightly, and was known to double-check his locks before turning in.
Eventually, the old man's luck ran out when thieves came to steal his fish. One evening, despite his locks and preparations, he was awoken by a handful of frightened village youths in over their heads, including Mercy and Camas Firewater. He chased the gang to the ship's deck, and in panic, the Sorcerer attempted to cast a Spell of sleeping on Old Man Breagurd. His Wild Magic flared into darts of force, cutting the fisherman down where he stood, and forcing the Devilborn to leave his village for good.
Kobbie's body was not found for days, and was eventually cast out to see in a traditional funeral, with few attending the ceremony.
