Fianna Mór

The year 2808 in the Age of Autumn, in the Recorded Eons, was a rough year for the people of the Grim Countries. So much happened and yet, so much went unnoticed. This was the year marked upon the historical scrolls as the Year of Invasions and the title is apt. Not only was Inis Mona invaded from its south-most shores by the Unknown, but those same invasions drove the Huldufolk from Aryngol and its surrounding Unknown. This put them in conflict with both Six-Bridges and the general Fwoarian population of the Low Muck.

That same year, North-the-Lake was besieged by the terrible forces of the Fomorii. The fighting was so terrible and so vicious, that a nearby wayfort had been named "Curath", or Dog Fort, because of the dozens of starving, feral dogs that picked at the fallen after each battle. When the Fomorii were pushed out, they were replaced by the dark Winter Court fey of the Queen of Night and Hunger.

Through it all, through the blood and the death, the people of Tailté na Bearú never feared for their own safety. Even when the hag known as Mother Mackie attacked and captured most of the citizens of Heroholm, the trust and fervor in their local heroes held strong. Thus, is the reputation of famed Fianna Mór. Heroes, champions, dungeon-delvers and rangers all.

Despite their name, the Fianna Mór are not a militant faction by design, although they can fill the role by necessity. Instead, they are the Inisas' foremost authorities on exploring ancient wonders, darkest dungeons and lairs of underlords. This does not make them scholars, however! These are the rough hands that haul treasure from tombs or the cunning wrist that picks the locks of ruined vaults. While they have experience avoiding traps, dealing with monsters and roughing it in every form of environment the Grim Countries can throw at them, do not expect your average member to be a wealth of knowledge on occult mysticism.

Structure

Membership

Technically, anyone who is not a criminal is allowed admittance into the Fianna Mór. However, those with skills and experiences directly related to exploration, dungeoneering, engineering or arcane spellcraft are most often chosen for membership as those skills benefit the organization the most.

Rank & Renown

Strangely, rank and renown are earned through exploring new dungeons and mapping them. Fianna Mór describe dungeons as "Any enclosed, but not necessarily subterranean, ecosystem that is either naturally occurring or man-made designed to protect, hide or restrain treasure, secrets or entities via traps, supporting creatures or arcane malignancy." and require a completed map before anyone will recommend you for a higher position. This is the sole form of upward movement in the Fianna Mór; peer review.

Rank One: Delver

Prerequisites: Rank 1 and renown 10 or higher.

The first position of any Fianna Mór is Delver. Delvers are a sort of apprenticeship and, to ensure they not only get the most experience they can, but also survive to make use of that experience, Delvers are expected to foray first into dungeons when working with other members of the Fianna Mór. However, they do not go it alone, as during these times the most veteran member of the sortie accompanies them. They may also benefit from dormitories and dining halls at Fianna Mór Conclaves as as well as the benefits of trade deals in certain settlements.

You gain free room and board at Halla na Laochra or any Fianna Mór Conclave. Additionally, the mentorship afforded you in dungeons extends to Conclaves as well. When you Train during Downtime, you are assured a trainer in that skill is available at any Fianna Mór Conclave and costs for common gear are reduced by 10% in cities with a Fianna Mór Conclave.

Rank Two: Dungeoneer

Prerequisites: Rank 2 and renown 25 or higher.

At this rank, Fianna Mór likely have proved their worth by turning in a series of maps connected to various dungeons, delves and grottos. Their experiences have been mounting and they have a deep understanding, and respect, for those long-lost vaults hidden across the world. However, as the old saying goes, fortune and glory wait for none. When others speak in hushed tones of the ancient ruins in the hills, you merely grab a torch and your trusty ten-foot pole.

You gain the Trap Sense Edge without meeting the requirements. Additionally, you gain a Delver's Dowsing Rod, a devise that points the way to the exit the adventurer came in through. Incredibly useful for the larger, more labyrinthine dungeons and if lost can be replaced at cost at a Conclave. You no longer stay in dormitories and have a small, private room and bath at Fianna Mór Conclaves.

Rank Three: Dungeoneer Master

Prerequisites: Rank 3 and renown 50 or higher.

This is the final rank, the only higher rank is Bookkeeper, a dubious distinction. Those Fianna Mór that reach this rank are covered in a dungeon-map of scars. Each one telling of a trap that was slightly too quick, a monster slightly too strong, but in every case, never quick or strong enough to take out a Dungeoneer Master! You know every trick of the trade, every type of fungus and you've seen what horrors lurk in the shadows outside the torchlight. You are ready.

You gain the Favored Terrain Edge without meeting the requirements. Additionally, you gain a free reroll on any Skill roll you make in a dungeon.

Bookkeeper

The Bookkeeper is nominally "in charge" of the Fianna Mór, but really that means that they organize the many Conclaves and parties that are out there in the world. Fianna Mór do not use a real system of authority, although many listen to the Bookkeeper out of respect as theya15739db-c4c2-47a6-813b-d61137403bb0.webp are most often the most veteran of the most veteran delvers. Each Conclave has its own meritocratic way of determining who takes the lead among them.

Dues

For anyone under the rank of Dungeoneer Master, the dues are a simple 5% cut of any treasure they find within the confines of a dungeon they entered via a lead received from or at the request of the Fianna Mór. Dungeoneer Masters will often be requested to station themselves in out-of-the-way Conclaves for a protracted duration, typically a week. Those mentors don't appear from nowhere!

Public Agenda

The Fianna Mór have been very open about their intended goals. While they certainly make a profit diving the dungeons and delves of the Grim Countries, they do so with another purpose in mind. Kidd "Silvermane" McLoughlin, the current "leader" of the Fianna Mór claims that each dungeon, delve and secret room could hold a clue to the next great horror Trynnalta decides to set loose upon Trynnalta, lest anyone forget about the Unknown or the Gods of the Outer Night.

Assets

The following is a list of assets, in a broad sense, available to the Organization as a whole:

  • Halla na Laochra, a large estate in eastern Tailté na Bearú and the main "base" of operations for the Fianna Mór.
  • A vineyard and viticulture in that same region.
  • Conclaves in every major settlement on Inis Mona, and one in Novprístav and Zmejprijatel.
  • Each conclave has a bathhouse with at least a bust of one of its founding members; Ayen Raloydark.
  • The main bathhouse at Halla na Laochra has a full size, nude statue of him.

History

Established largely by accident in 2808 AoA, the Fianna Mór never set out to create a guild of like-minded individuals. Each of its founding members, and there were many, was wrapped up in their own personal issue, tragedies and concerns. However, they all had one thing in common; most of what they ever ended up looking for was at the bottom-end of a dungeon. This tradition continues even into its modern incarnation. Members specialize in plumbing the depths of dungeons, delves and other, ignoble locales for coin and glory.

Towards the later parts of 2820 AoA, the founding members, or what remained of them, stepped down. Each of them had finished their goals, recovered what they could from their tragic lives and set an organization in their place to watch over the town of Heroholm. They never imagined what it would become. With the populace of Heroholm given leave in 2823 AoA to move to and replace the now-dead populace of Dawson, they did so reluctantly as they greatly enjoyed the nearness of Halla na Laochra, the base of operations for the Fianna Mór. At roughly this time, the son of Rose McLoughlin, Kidd "Silvermane" McLoughlin, took over as Bookkeeper so that Kiora Adair could go be with her family in the Horselands. He promised the people of the new Caern-Rath; Laochranoc, who were once the people of Heroholm, that they would always have the Fianna Mór to call upon.

Since then, the people of Laochranoc and many other Caern-Raths benefit from Conclaves inside their walls. Each one is a small hall, dormitory and arsenal for the local members to return to and prepare for their next foray as the rest or recover.

In the Age of Discovery, Kidd Silvermane has managed to work out an accord with the Monaian Royal Cartographical Commission, ensuring that members of the Fianna Mór would accompany any future expeditions to serve as experts for any tombs, ruins or otherwise dangerous enclosed spaces the expedition may encounter.

Sources of Income

Almost all of their income is generated from dungeon-delving exploits or from "donations" from certain settlements. This usually means a very thorough investigation of nearby areas of concern such as haunted ruins and cursed towers.
