HotSC Session 31

February 23, 2025

The Agate Seekers are invited to Wagner Shatterhorn's Magnificent Mansion, where he shows them around. It becomes clear that Wagner has a type, as his ghostly servants are very buff Minotaur and Orc-ish butlers. While Ylos Asol and Mr. Cracklebones AKA Ul'grak, were playing chess in the sleeping quarters, Volk Lesnoy, Philomena Snapdragon and Zora decided to train with each other. Mikhail, giving a stern warning to the three not to shoot each other with guns, went to the Bathroom to have a bath and clean himself up a bit, while Dareth Lion'el Griffmane needed to process what happened last time and went to the dining room to just drink some water. Sooty meanwhile went to the other sleeping quarters and cuddled up to Maya, Zora's dog, to try to cheer himself up a bit.

Of course, Philomena immediately disregarded Mikhail's warning and used her revolver. It didn't help, though, as both she and Zora were defeated in their training session; just barely though, as everyone looked very beat up by the end. Mikhail was not happy.

Mikhail then knocked on Wagner's door within the Mansion, as he offered him a chance to pray at his shrine of the Olympian Pantheon, as he noticed Mikhail's symbol... which had changed to a Symbol of Artemis. Up there, Wagner told him a little about his family's chosen goddess, Athena, and then left him alone to pray. During this prayer, where he asked for guidance, he heard her faint voice, giving him a little bit of ceremonial guidance for now and for the future, and Mikhail lit a candle due to her suggestion, feeling acknowledgement in response.

After a nice, Grehelian dinner in the dining hall, where Dareth's food this time tasted quite a bit off, the party went to bed. Volk, however had a dream... during which he fell off the bed and shifted; thankfully waking nobody up.

However, as he awoke with a worried feeling, he couldn't help but see Cracklebones in his Ul'grak-form, looking down at him with a worried face, asking "Uhm... Why did you just look like that?" After Volk asked rather pointedly, Ul'grak admitted that he saw Volk have what appeared to be a nightmare, and just when he was trying to comfort him a bit, he saw his body shift, almost like an Illusion, and he saw... a skeletal, wolflike face... As it was still late, Volk went back to bed, but with a very worried feeling.

At breakfast, Volk then revealed everything to the Party, Wagner and Ul'grak (with Ylos preferring to stay in his room and reading a book, and thus not finding out about this). Volk talked about his dream, about how it continued off where it usually left off (him protecting a woman, him nearly dying from his old bandit comrades fighting back, the woman trying to find a healer and him falling unconscious by a tree), but this time it continued... with elements of what Wagner saw yesterday before it cut off, only it kept going. Memories that were experienced with his eyes, but were not his. The woman, holding something to his chest, crying and chanting something. Him rising up and shifting... painfully... his body breaking and his blood staining the forest floor, as the plants and leaves stuck to him. His voice, in an unfamiliar cadence, asking his "mistress" for orders. Her crying, running away, telling him to stay away. His own feelings of punishing criminals and bandits and protecting innocents, overpowering. And years upon years of violence and protection. After fighting an Arrash bandit and touching a red crystal, he woke up as himself... and eventually met Limni.

Ul'grak meanwhile told everyone what he saw. An Illusion, seemingly wavering, revealing... bones and leaves. This intrigued Wagner, and the Archmage decided to cast True Seeing on himself... And then looked in both awe and worry at Volk. Dareth also wanted to see, so he cast the spell again... and Dareth saw the same gruesome creature... A lycanthropes' bones, compressed into a vaguely humanoid shape, held in place by autumn foliage and vines, as well as a crystal in the center of his chest. Whenever someone tried to touch Volk, the vines would shift in such a way that they'd feel like normal flesh... and when he ate, his body shifted, and seemingly absorbed the food.

Wagner asked if someone in the party knew Identify, when the topic of the crystal came up. Sooty piped up, saying he knew it, and casted it on Volk's chest... finding out that, embedded in there is an Illiadian Artifact, the Forest Garnet. And it's irreversibly connected to Volk's soul. After a bit of crisis management, and a bit of dark humor, both from the party, as well as Volk, the party promised to Volk that they'd be able to find out more about this. They also thought that they'd probably have to ask Limni Diluvi about this. Everyone's (except Zora's) secrets were also shared, Dareth once again talking about how he's a member of the Griffmane Family, and Mikhail talking about how his clerical magic comes from Artemis and his sorcerous magic from a blood connection to Corellon Larethian; and how he's not a full Eladrin but a Half-Tirrdaka. Philomena also came clean about the food she's been making disgusting, to test the party if they'd notice if their food was poisoned.

It was then time to say goodbye to Wagner, he gathered the party with the steeds of both Ul'grak and Ylos (who remains blissfully unaware of what transpired), wishing the party all the best and opening up a Teleportation Circle to his estate further east, which the party and their clients promptly entered.
