A Paladin of the Church of the Nameless, Bar'T'Rd was born as the only child of Kar'a K'Lns, a Trollish immigrant, on a farm just outside Coillearnach in what is now the Second Kingdom of Tir. The man who raised him was her husband Tr'Vr K'Lns, who Bar'T'Rd considers his father; however he is not his biological father and his true paternity is not public knowledge as Bar'T'Rd, despite making it clear he is aware who his real father is, refuses to talk about it; as such and due to the similarity between the name "Bar'T'Rd" and the word "bastard" he is often mockingly called "Bastard" instead of his name, something he detests.
He spent his youth admiring his maternal grandfather T'Dor L'b'rt, himself the former Father Superior of the South Tiran contingent of the Order of Society, and when time came for his national service with the TBA he served as a security guard before fully joining the clergy and following in his grandfather's footsteps as an Acolyte and eventually a full Paladin of the same order, being based out of Balla.
His poor upbringing and his grandfather's influence made him thoroughly dedicated to the plight of the common man, and he quickly became well-known locally for his charity and for helping the poor and less fortunate, even to his own detriment at times. This stubborn dedication to his morals has however get him on the wrong side of Duke Erwen multiple times by attempting to block him from trying to use his powers as Governor of the city selfishly. It also seems to have created something of an inferiority complex within Bar'T'Rd himself, as (though he would never admit it) his idolisation of his grandfather is such that he has become effectively married to the job, putting his role as a Paladin and his determination to live up to his grandfather's legacy before his own happiness to the point where he has become a blunt workaholic, with seemingly his only hobby being repairing and modifying his own gear. He has earned himself numerous friends in the City Guard however (including Devlin de'Valice, the Earl Marshal and the Duke's own brother) and amongst many business owners within the city, but does also have serious issues working with the Order of Dark Paladins due to their Troll supremacist ideology but is willing to put his own feelings aside for the greater good.
He is often accompanied by a trio of Kobold squires named Oono, Dox and Trez... who often spend much of their time badly disguised in a trench-coat for some unknown reason, much to his chagrin. It is clear he cares deeply about the three though, as after they were severely injured fighting a group of undead Giants he felt personally responsible for the injuries they had sustained.
During Duke Erwen's Tournament, he befriended Ashraiah "Ash" el Sabine (whom he defeated in the single combat contest), and assisted the Band of Misfits when Syx passed out (due to a combination of drunkenness and a heavy blow to the head) during the joust and needed to hide her true form to avoid unwanted attention. Ironically, he was reunited with Ash's close friend Qau during the Balla Incursion, where they both worked together as part of the defence efforts (though Qau didn't initially recognise him with his helmet off.)
His original weapon of choice is noted to be an old, barely usable greatsword formerly belonging to his aforementioned grandfather, which he refuses to replace due to its sentimental value despite it being damaged and worn to the point of being largely useless; he has been attempting to repair it for quite some time with little success. His current primary weapon is the mysterious Sword of Moss, a powerful magical greatsword which was taken from the corpse of the formidable undead beast known as Unknown.
He also owns a large floating shield, which he acquired from the Grand Order as a thank-you for assisting them with several experiments that required a skilled swordsman. While the word used to activate it is chosen at random by unknown means and is both totally incongruous and either slightly embarrassing or utterly bewildering, the shield is an extremely useful tool.
