Maerth is humanity’s new homeworld. The terraformed Mars not only is the center for human civilization within The Last Hand, but also a mark of the species resilience and  adaptability,  in the face of the destruction of Earth. Once a barren, red planet, it now flourishes with Earth-like biomes, rich ecosystems, and a thriving human population. The terraforming effort, started during humanitys first colonization effort of space and was later completed with alien assistance, transformed Maerth into a hub of culture, politics, and power. Its skies glow with the faint light of Soul, the dim red giant that once illuminated Earth.

Maerth represents a new chapter for humanity, a beacon of survival amid a galaxy in decay. The planet is a melting pot of old Earth traditions and futuristic ideals, housing nations that blend ancient customs and modern ideas with advanced technologies and culture.

Politics

Maerth is home to 46 independent nations, each with its own unique culture, identity, and vision for the future. These nations can be broadly divided into two groups:

Great Maerthian Three

These are the planet's dominant powers, who have shaped much of its history and politics, and are able to project their influence across Human Space. Together, these three form a hegemonic triad, controlling their seperate Interstellar Empires and using their combined power and rivalry to maintain dominance over Maerth and half of human space:

  • Império de Tarsis: A constitutional monarchy blending Latin traditions with a divine-right philosophy, it wields influence through faith and governance.
  • 4th Republic of Erica: A liberal democracy with a modernized Western identity and a heavy reliance on its allied lesser powers within Coalition of the Shielded Republics (CSR) and their pervasive surveillance systems to maintain order.
  • Afri-Zen Synthocracy: A semi-socialist technocracy prioritizing innovation and social welfare, the house humanitys largest Human-Cyborg population, and are deeply rooted in early astroid miners from African and Asian cultural legacies.

The 43 Other Nations

The remaining nations, collectively known as a type of nations called Communities of Planetary Nations (CPN), vary widely in size, power, global  and planetary influence. These states lack the interstellar reach of the Great Three but are vibrant cultural and political entities in their own right. Many of them preserve the traditions of old Earth, are recent developments or pioneers of unique societies shaped by Maerth’s history and climate.

The CPN nations are often Allies or Puppets like Smaller states dependent on the Great Three for economic or military support, Neutral Buffer States like Nations maintaining strategic neutrality to avoid entanglements with the Great Three like corporate holdings of mega-corperations. While a select few are gaining influence within the Soul System, with aspirations to challenge the Great Three’s dominance.

While the Great Three dominate Maerth geopolitics, individuals and movements from the smaller nations often rise to prominence, becoming widely recognized across human space. The CPN nations contribute heavily to Maerth’s cultural, scientific, and political diversity, and some believe that one among them might eventually ascend to rival the Great Three.

Cultural Groups of Maerth

Maerth’s history is defined by three waves of settlement, each contributing to its cultural diversity and eventual division. Each group brought distinct identities, shaping the planet’s modern political and social landscape.

First Wave: The Pioneer Cultures

Timeframe: Pre-terraforming (~22nd-23rd century)

Origins: Early colonists from Earth’s global powers and private space agencies.

Culture:

Multicultural and Ethical Foundations: These pioneers were selected for their skills, adaptability, and desire to escape Earth’s constraints. The colony was deliberately diverse to prevent mono-cultural dominance and ensure a robust genetic and cultural foundation.

Core Values: Collaboration, scientific innovation, and survival in the harsh Martian environment.

Legacy: The first settlement, Arenae Prime, remains the oldest and most influential city on Maerth. Its original ideals of unity and cooperation, symbolized by its multicultural heritage, have become romanticized over time.

Identity: Seen as the "Founders of Maerth," they hold cultural prestige, often framing themselves as the guardians of Maerth's original spirit.

Second Wave: The Terraforming Boomers

Timeframe: After terraforming completion (~24th century)

Origins: Earth’s urban centers, wealthy nations, and other space colonies.

Culture:

Earth-Centric Revivalism: These settlers brought Earth’s regional cultures with them, striving to recreate familiar environments and traditions. Cities, districts, and institutions were named after Earth locations, leading to pockets of neo-nationalism (e.g., Neo-Athens, New Kyoto).

Economic Hierarchies: Wealthier settlers from established Earth nations dominated early terraform-developed regions, creating disparities between Earth elites and Maerth-born pioneers.

Legacy: This wave left behind much of Maerth's infrastructure, including urban centers, irrigation networks, and atmospheric plants.

Identity: They are often seen as the architects of Maerth’s prosperity, but also its inequality.

Third Wave: The Refugees

Timeframe: After Earth's destruction (~26th century)

Origins: Refugees from Earth, devastated Sol colonies, and extrasolar settlements.

Culture:

Trauma and Survivalism: These groups arrived with memories of the Intersolar War and the loss of Earth. They carried remnants of Earth’s cultural traditions, fragmented by displacement and desperation.

Neo-Patriotism: Many sought to preserve or resurrect their old national identities, leading to a rise in individualism and the eventual fracturing of Maerth's unity.

Legacy: Refugee enclaves evolved into distinct city-states or factions. Over time, these groups adapted to Maerth’s conditions, developing unique hybrid cultures blending Earth traditions and Martian pragmatism.

Identity: Seen as survivors of Earth’s fall, they often frame themselves as inheritors of Earth’s legacy, sparking cultural tensions with earlier settlers.

Modern Maerth: A Divided Planet

Following Earth’s destruction, the previously unified planet splintered into rival factions, each attempting to preserve or revive aspects of Earth’s lost cultures. This neo-patriotism fostered cultural pride but also division, as groups clashed over how to define Maerth’s identity.

Geography

Terraforming transformed Mars into a lush, Earth-like world. Advanced technology created breathable air, stabilized temperatures, and introduced a hydrological cycle, resulting in oceans, rivers, and lakes. Flora and fauna were carefully imported from Earth, with some genetically modified to adapt to Maerth’s slightly lower gravity and unique atmosphere.

Oceans:

1. Tarsis Ocean: Occupies the lowlands of Tharsis, covering the western hemisphere. A deep, azure sea with volcanic islands, it is Maerth’s largest body of water.

2. Hellas Sea: A vast, salty inland sea formed in the Hellas Basin, surrounded by fertile plains.

3. Arctic Sea: A cold, shallow ocean covering the northern lowlands, with icy currents and tundra-like shores

Continents:

1. Arenae Terra: Home to Arenae Prime and the oldest settlements, located in the southern highlands. Its geography includes rugged mountain ranges and sprawling grasslands.

2. Elysium Continents: Two connected landmasses in the eastern hemisphere, marked by rolling hills, dense forests, and temperate coastlines.

3. Noachis Plateau: A rocky, arid region with sparse vegetation and scattered settlements, known for its mineral wealth.

Atmosphere and Environment

Maerth’s atmosphere is rich in oxygen but slightly thinner than Earth’s, making high altitudes challenging for unacclimated individuals. Its red soil persists in many regions, creating vibrant landscapes of red deserts, green forests, and blue oceans. Seasonal variations are mild compared to Earth, with cooler winters and warmer summers due to Maerth’s thinner atmosphere and axial tilt.

Humanity's Political Capital

The survival of humanity in the twilight era of the galaxy relies on cooperation, and Maerth has become the beating heart of Human diplomacy. Many interstellar alliances and organizations maintain a presence on Maerth, where nearly all independent human nations have embassies or capitals on the planets surface. Among these alliances, three stand out as cornerstones of human interstellar coordination:

Maerthian Trade Commission (MTC)

The MTC is humanity's central authority for regulating interstellar trade, resource allocation, and economic arbitration.

United Human Defence Board (UHDB)

The UHDB is a military and security council created to ensure the survival of humanity as a species against internal and external threats.
