Etherstone

Elemental Worldstone

The Etherstone is one of the four paramount Worldstones, anchoring the balance of reality within the Prime Plane and serving as the nexus of arcane magic across the Continuum Crystal Cosmology. The Etherstone weaves the fabric of the Ether, the universal energy that connects all magic, binding the elemental Plane of Zephyron (Air) to the Prime Plane. Its existence ensures the unbroken flow of magic that permeates Tolria, Osira, and the cosmos itself.

Purpose and Influence

The Etherstone channels the essence of air and magic, serving as the cornerstone of Ether-Rifting, the ancient art of manipulating the threads of reality. The stone radiates an ethereal aura, an endless dance of shimmering light and invisible threads that ripple through the planes, tethering the Prime Plane to the elemental forces of Zephyron. Its influence sustains the magical forces of the world, empowering spellcasters, enabling the Riftways, and preserving the equilibrium between realms.

Nestled within the mists of Aerenal, an isolated island of unparalleled beauty and mysticism, the Etherstone's energies shape the land into an ethereal haven for the Vanir. The surrounding region is imbued with arcane resonance, where the air itself hums with latent magic, and the skies shimmer with unearthly light.

Cultural Significance

The Etherstone is revered by the Vanir, particularly the inhabitants of Aerenal, as the divine source of magic and the heart of their civilization. They believe it to be a gift from Mystera, the goddess of magic, who entrusted them with its protection and stewardship. Aerenal, shrouded in perpetual mist, is a magocratic utopia ruled by The Elden Council, a conclave of the most powerful Vanir archmages and Ether-Rifting masters.

The Elden Council serves not only as custodians of Aerenal but also as guardians of the Etherstone, ensuring its harmony with the Ethe. Their rituals, performed in Mystera’s name, bind the stone’s power to the fabric of the world, preventing chaos and imbalance. The Council’s actions maintain the delicate relationship between the Prime Plane and the elemental forces that shape existence.

The Etherstone’s location within Aerenal is a tightly held secret, known only to the Vanir and their trusted allies. The stone is nestled atop an arctic lake above The Elden Hall, which is accessible through an ancient Ether-Rifting ritual known only by the Elden Council. This secrecy ensures that the Etherstone remains protected from those who might seek to misuse its vast power.

Zirael the Golden Dragon

The Etherstone is protected by the Archon of Air, Zirael the Golden Dragon (aka Goldbrand), a primordial embodiment of the element of air. Zirael acts as both the guardian of the stone and the steward of its power, ensuring that it is wielded wisely and never corrupted. Zirael was created Aether, the elemental Primus deity of Air.

Unknown, the god of light and creation, fashioned the Aether Drake in Zirael’s image, entrusting them to safeguard the balance of The Air Realm. Though many Aether Drake were cursed or culled during The Riftfire Rebellion, Zirael remains a steadfast guardian of the Etherstone.

Whispers of The Wind

In addition to Zirael’s presence, the Etherstone is safeguarded by a perpetual lineage of Avatars, mortals chosen every 3,000–4,000 years to serve as its stewards.

Lineage of The Avatars

Avatar AegisThe first Avatar of the Etherstone, Aegis, was chosen by Zirael to establish the stewardship of the stone during the early Third Age. Aegis underwent the Trial of Mystera, a divine rite in which he ventured to a floating island shrouded in mist at the far northern reaches of Tolria. There, he confronted Mystera herself, proving his worth to wield the stone’s power. Aegis founded the magocratic civilization of Aerenal, ensuring the Etherstone’s protection and teaching his people the sacred art of Ether-Rifting. Settlers from Aerenal would later establish the sprawling Vanir civilization of Itelion in Tolria.

Archmage Kelak NilfardThe second Avatar, Kelak, was a tragic figure, once indoctrinated into the Cult of Infinitum by his brother, Kalekai Blackhand. Despite his initial fall to darkness, Kelak redeemed himself by aiding a band of heroes in thwarting Kalekai’s plans to start the Third Continuum Crisis. Kelak was ultimately chosen by Zirael to succeed Aegis as the Avatar of Air. He was later slain in battle by experimental Rift Magic weaponry wielded by the Imperial Navy of Bastile, sacrificing himself to save his people.

Avatar Guy the GratefulThe current Avatar, Guy the Grateful, is a half-elf and a renowned hero of The Sunsations. A long-lost son of Alana Aefir, Guy rekindled his bond with the Vanir by returning to Aerenal and saving his people from Balthazar the Blighted, a corruption that threatened to consume the island. Guy’s adventures across Osira and Tolria have made him a figure of legend, and his connection to the Etherstone has revitalized hope among the Vanir.

Legacy and Mythology

The Etherstone is more than a source of magic; it is a pillar of existence, holding together the intricate balance of the cosmos. Its energies permeate the world, enabling the flow of magic and the connection between planes. It serves as a reminder of the Vanir’s sacred duty to safeguard the gifts of the gods and maintain the harmony of creation.

Yet the Etherstone’s history is also one of strife and ambition. From the machinations of Malekith and the Cult of Infinitum to the countless wars waged over its power, the stone’s legacy is a testament to the dangers of unbridled magic and the enduring resilience of those who protect it.

To gaze upon the Etherstone is to glimpse eternity itself, where every thread of magic converges into a tapestry beyond mortal comprehension.
