Early Life and Connection to the Temple of Asura

Balik Walraven grew up in the bustling city of Seregon, a proud dwarf with deep familial ties to the influential Walraven family. However, unlike his inventive and research-driven kin, Balik felt drawn to a different kind of power—the divine flame of Asura, the Goddess of Dawn. The moment he first stepped into the Temple of Asura, he knew his path lay in service to the light. The Spear of Asura, lost long ago, was a constant reminder of the world’s need for those willing to stand against the darkness.

Balik became a disciple under Little Flower, the Tabaxi High Priest of the temple. Under Little Flower’s guidance, Balik learned not only the rituals of Asura’s flame but also the importance of protecting the weak and shining a light into the world’s darkest corners. Balik admired Little Flower’s nightly patrols to hunt the undead, and soon, he found himself accompanying his mentor on these dangerous missions. Through these experiences, Balik developed a strong sense of duty—not just to the temple, but to the people of Seregon, especially those unable to protect themselves from the lurking undead menace.

Connection to the Yard Rats

As his training progressed, Balik found himself restless within the temple walls. Though he revered the goddess Asura, he knew that he could not serve her fully from the safety of the temple. Little Flower, seeing the growing fire in his young disciple, suggested that Balik could do more for the city by stepping outside the temple’s boundaries. Thus, Balik joined the Yard Rats, a ragtag group of adventurers based in the Kerkhof Station, the old train depot in the Kerkhof Ferry District.

The Yard Rats offered something the temple could not—a chance to fight for the city’s future, out in the field, where Balik could both learn and test his strength. His healing abilities and connection to Asura’s light made him a valuable addition to the team, especially in a city where undead roamed and the darkness crept ever closer.

Balik quickly formed strong bonds with the other Yard Rats. Their missions—protecting the city from minor threats and keeping the peace—mirrored Asura’s teachings in surprising ways. While the Yard Rats weren’t clerics or monks, they believed in keeping Seregon safe, and that resonated deeply with Balik. He viewed their actions as part of a larger mission: to bring light where there was darkness.

A Personal Quest: The Spear of Asura

One of Balik’s greatest personal goals is to recover the Spear of Asura, the holy relic stolen from the temple over a century ago. The Seven Sins may claim to have used it to save the city during the Amber Fever, but to Balik and the worshippers of Asura, its loss remains an open wound. Balik believes that if the Spear were to be returned, it could be a beacon of hope and a tool to push back the growing undead presence plaguing Seregon.

Balik’s connection to the Yard Rats gives him a unique opportunity to search for clues about the spear’s whereabouts. Though The Yard Rats' missions primarily involve safeguarding the city, Balik always keeps an ear open for any mention of the spear, or its last known location, Voor Daran Palace. The Spear’s return is something Little Flower prays for each morning, and Balik has made it a personal vow to see that prayer answered.

Relationship with Asbera Walraven

Despite their shared surname, Balik and Asbera Walraven lead very different lives. Asbera, a researcher for The Walraven Consortium, is known for her benevolence and creativity, often helping the poor and sick with her inventions and distributing Seregon Serum to those in need. While she doesn’t share Balik’s devotion to Asura, Asbera’s kind heart and her quiet determination to help the underprivileged have earned her the respect of her cousin.

The two cousins frequently meet at The Alchemical Bean, a cozy coffee shop in the Kerkhof Ferry District, where they discuss their work. Asbera’s interest in The Yard Rats' restored locomotive has opened up new possibilities for collaboration between them. Balik sees in Asbera a potential ally, not just for the Yard Rats, but in his broader mission to restore the Spear of Asura. Asbera’s connections within the Walraven Consortium and her technical expertise may prove invaluable in navigating the city’s complicated political landscape and tracking down the relic.

Though they move in different circles, Balik’s quiet faith and Asbera’s scientific curiosity complement one another. Together, they represent two sides of the Walraven family—one steeped in tradition and the divine, the other in invention and progress.

Balik's Role in the Yard Rats

As a member of the Yard Rats, Balik is the party's moral compass, guiding his companions with the teachings of Asura. His healing abilities make him indispensable on their more dangerous missions, and his strong connection to Little Flower gives him unique insight into the hidden threats facing Seregon, such as the undead menace in the Old Knot District. Balik often shares intelligence gathered from the temple with the Yard Rats, helping them navigate the treacherous political and criminal underworlds that plague the city.

However, Balik’s connection to the Yard Rats goes beyond simple practicality. He believes that the Yard Rats—this unlikely group of adventurers—could become something more. Though he is skeptical of the prophecy that suggests they may one day become the Sentinels of Seregon, Balik does see the potential for greatness within the group. His loyalty to his friends is unshakable, and should the day come when the Yard Rats are called upon to take up the mantle of the Sentinels, Balik would stand by them without hesitation.

Motivations and Conflict

Balik’s motivations are deeply tied to his faith in Asura and his desire to see Seregon safe from the ever-encroaching darkness. The theft of the Spear of Asura haunts him, as does the knowledge that Seregon’s greatest relic may still lie in the hands of Tur Nyaan or one of his successors. Balik is also driven by a sense of responsibility—to both the temple and to Little Flower, whose nightly hunts have saved countless lives.

However, Balik faces inner conflict. He knows that Captain Dirk Vrederic and the Thieves Guild fixer Yonkers are closing in on Little Flower due to his ties to several deaths in the Old Knot District. Balik worries that Little Flower’s dedication to hunting the undead is drawing too much attention and could place the temple in danger. Despite his respect for his mentor, Balik may need to step in, either to protect Little Flower or to keep him from being drawn further into the city’s criminal conflicts.

Ultimately, Balik’s place in the Yard Rats and his growing role as a protector of Seregon mean that he must balance his duties to the temple with the ever-expanding responsibilities of his life in the city. Whether or not he and the Yard Rats accept their destiny as the new Sentinels of Seregon, Balik knows one thing for certain: Asura’s light must never be extinguished, and he will stop at nothing to see her flame burn brightly in the city’s darkest corners.
