A Black Dragon born in a cove in the eastern Mark of Elteos, Zyrmintyl was ousted from her home as a wyrmling and made the flight over the Greatlake's waters. There, she grew around the hills of the Stone Tooth, feeding on animals and the many raider tribes who occupied the hills. Eventually, Zyrmintyl grew strong enough that the Orc tribes began to scatter in the area, and she looked to set up a lair. From a mire on the east side of Stone Tooth, she followed an underground channel to the Black Lake under the mountain.
The underground lake was an ideal spot for the young dragon to begin to set up a hoard. She hunted barbarian tribes and farmers alike, but the wealth she gained from these peasants was not close to matching the occasional piece of wealth that flowed from the ravine higher in the mountain. Zyrmintyl found that the Black Lake connected to the ancient Dwarf bastion of Khundrukar. She took what wealth she could from the mostly-looted caverns, and lived out her days below the surface.
A group of Troglodytes led by Kaarghaz later took residence in Khundrukar, and upon learning of the black dragon, they began to offer whatever valuables they could find in worship. From this group, Zyrmintyl gained another name; translated into Common, she became known as "Nightscale".
