Otherborn

"Otherborn" creatures were a type of Mortalkind who could differ significantly in origin than their counterparts. Laced with magic from their birth as a result of a flux in a planar Leyline, an ancient Curse, or myriad unknown reasons, a child could be born of significantly different appearance than their parents. In general, however, otherborn of a specific lineage could mate with those resembling them, bearing offspring that carried the same magic within them.

Across Commona , otherborn were met with reactions shaped by myth and memory rather than consistent practice. In some places they were prized as omens or curiosities, granted patronage and protection so long as their presence was seen as auspicious or useful. In rural regions they were more often feared, blamed for poor harvests, strange weather, or ill fortune, and driven away or quietly destroyed when anxiety ran high. Elsewhere they were barred from temples and councils alike, treated as disruptions to the proper order of the world, and tolerated only so long as they remained distant and silent; this mistreatment lead to most otherborn species only forming connections amongst their own kind.

Devilborn, Angelborn, Reborn, or Genieborn were sometimes referred to as "planetouched," while Dragonborn, Wereborn, or Giantborn were sometimes called "ancientfolk". The emergence of Synthborn, who lacked true parentage at all, further muddied the term; they were still considered otherborn, but their lack of reproduction muddied etymological waters on who was considered "mortal" at all.
