Mount Hotenow is an active volcanic mountain in The Crags. In the nearby city of Neverwinter, residents told legends that the mountain was home to fire giants or fire elementals who produced heat to keep the Neverwinter River always warm, providing the city with a temperate climate and ice-free port even at its location far to the north. Mount Hotenow was believed to be dormant, until a massive eruption in 1451 DR destroyed one of two iconic peaks, causing cataclysmic damage in the region. The mountain continues to smolder and produce periodic lava flows, causing denizens of the area to fear another eruption.
