Renaer Neverember

The Reluctant Heir, the Lioncub of Neverwinter

Renaer Neverember is the estranged son of Dagult Neverember, the disgraced former Open Lord of Waterdeep and self-styled Lord Protector of Neverwinter. Born into privilege and trained in politics, Renaer has spent most of his adult life actively distancing himself from his father’s name, wealth, and schemes.

A gentleman by breeding but a dissident by temperament, Renaer walks the narrow line between Waterdeep’s noble elite and its subversive undercurrents. Though not a formal Harper, he is often found in the company of agents, rebels, and adventurers who oppose tyranny—especially when that tyranny bears the shape of a golden coin or a gilded mask.

He is perhaps best known in the Contemporary Era for his indirect role in The Grand Game, wherein his father's stolen fortune became the subject of a city-wide war—and Renaer, predictably, wanted no part of it.

Personality and Beliefs

Renaer is a man burdened by legacy but unconsumed by it. Quietly brave and emotionally intelligent, he prefers listening to speaking, wit to bluster, and diplomacy to force. Unlike his father, he sees nobility not as entitlement but as responsibility—though he rarely invokes his titles.

He is known to:

  • Support philanthropic causes in the North and Sea Wards

  • Volunteer with the City Watch under an assumed name

  • Frequent the Yawning Portal, where he funds and organizes expeditions into Undermountain for adventurers in need

  • Privately back the Trollskull Tavern and the Hype Squad, particularly as the Grand Game spiraled out of control

Despite efforts to remain neutral, his name alone attracts attention and assumptions—making him a useful political pawn to those unaware that he plays a very different game than his father.

Estrangement from Dagult Neverember

Renaer and Dagult have been publicly estranged for over a decade. The rift grew from ideological differences—Renaer opposed Dagult’s authoritarian tactics in Waterdeep—and exploded when Dagult began diverting city funds into secret coffers during The War of Dragons.

By the time of the Council of Waterdeep, Renaer had fully denounced his father. Some reports suggest he supplied evidence to Laeral Silverhand and the Harpers that led to Dagult’s downfall, though Renaer has never confirmed this.

Renaer refused all inheritance from his father’s Neverwinter holdings, lives in modest quarters in the Castle Ward, and publicly disavowed any claim to the Vault of Golorr, despite repeated threats and bribes from factions seeking to involve him.

Role in the Grand Game

While not a central player, Renaer Neverember was instrumental to several key events surrounding The Grand Game:

  • He aided Volothamp Geddarm in recruiting early adventurers to uncover the theft of the Stone of Golorr under the guise of rescuing their friend Floon (though some say he hoped this would lead to the hoard’s destruction)

  • He warned the Hype Squad early on about the Manshoon’s interest in the gold, delivering encoded Harper intelligence

  • He used his dwindling political influence to stall Watch warrants on Trollskull Manor in the early days of the martial law crackdown

  • It is suspected—but not confirmed—that he orchestrated a break-in at the Cassalanter Vault archives, using his family name as a distraction

Despite these contributions, Renaer has largely avoided the spotlight. When asked why he didn’t try to claim the hoard as Dagult’s heir, he reportedly replied:

“I don’t want the gold. I want the damage undone.”

Allies and Connections

  • Laeral Silverhand respects him deeply and occasionally consults him on civic matters.

  • Leosin Erlanthar trusts him enough to share limited Harper intelligence, though Renaer remains non-member.

  • The Hype Squad considers him a soft ally—particularly Ambrose Rosznar, who shares Renaer’s flair for intrigue and highborn rebellion.

  • Volothamp Geddarm insists they are close friends. Renaer insists otherwise.

Closing Remarks

Renaer is proof that blood does not bind the soul. Where his father hoards, he shares. Where his father builds walls, he leaves doors ajar. And where his father fell, Renaer still walks, quiet and unbowed.
