The Great Siege of Arcanopolis was the final major engagement of the Years of Blood and Iron. As the Legitimists rapidly lost ground, the main Beldonian army under the command of Prince Abbos Pelegon marched on the Imperial capital and put it under siege. The siege lasted for nearly a year and led to immense unrest and starvation in the capital. During the siege, Shahanshah Zottyah II Pelegon became increasingly paranoid until she was assassinated in a palace coup by her Imperial Conclave so that her more pliable son, Pelegon IV, could take the throne.
The last great hope for the besieged Legitimists was the arrival of a Nerian relief army after they were able to negotiate an alliance with the Nerian Confederacy. However, that army was routed at the Battle at the Pass of Highwall, leading the Conclave to assassinate the toddler Shah Pelegon IV and present his head to the Beldonians as a token of surrender.
