Also known as the "Common League", Commona was the largest single nation in the Head of the Greatwyrm. The nation was a mercantile republic, characterized by diversity in both populations and customs. Cartographers estimated that Commona stretched over 2000 miles across at its longest point, from the west tip of cosmopolitan Cliffsunder to the eastern hinterlands reaching into the Sea of Clouds. The nation was ethnically composed a Human majority, but all types of Mortalkind could be found in its lands.

Commona boasted many near-independent houses, duchies, and fiefdoms, each with their own allies and squabbles. Though participation in the Common League was not mandatory, very few members ever chose to leave due to the litany of military and economic risks presented by secession. While all members within the Common League were expected to act only in their own interests, there were disputes where third-party mediation was necessary. All Common territories were constitutionally bound to defer to decisions made in its capital Emblem.

The League's historic borders were defined by the Unholy Siege Of Fort Verdane, the Battle Of Sylphglade, and the Eastern Sundering, after which Common Unification was ratified. In the ensuing centuries, a Common Calendar and TImeline were followed by all in Commona, and nearly all its people adopted Common as a mother Language. However, regional accents and dialects varied strongly across the republic, as did their religions, customs, and ethics.

Commona was also sometimes referred to as the "Land of Tome and Scepter"; this referred to its possession of the Epochal Artifacts Cometfall and Stonebinder, which both protected the republic from invasion and kept its member states in line. While the images of books and rods conveyed ideals of knowledge and nobility, those who understood the powers of the Epochal Artifacts knew that these symbols were far more fearsome than any whip or blade.
