One of the least-understood phenomena of the known world, scholars did not fully understand how to categorize or chart the Sea of Clouds. Seemingly descending southward from the Shifting Blue, the Sea was, over eons, expanding ever-more across Somnum. During the age of Common Unification, it covered eastern Scycae, much of the Crowncrests, and most of the known Giantlands.
This wall of clouds was incredibly thick, and passed high over mountains and low over the Shimmering Bay, clearing the borders of the Jozh-Mirozhae and the Mark of Elteos. Many who entered the Sea did not return; journeying inside was not just a matter of losing one's bearings, though visibility in these mists was impossible. The cloud cover masked intense winds and Magic Storms, and contained portals to other planes.
Some believed that the Sea of Clouds hid Portals leading to the Deepmists or the Bloomtides, while others theorized that Cloud Giant palaces floated above the area on these updrafts. The truth, however, could not be properly ascertained; the only agreed-upon answer was that it was an unknown threat to the lives of the Mortalkind at large.
