A theocratic town built on a forested cliffside peninsula on the Wealdshield Mountains, Umbirch was a historic settlement in the northeast Sea of Trees. Initially a small waypost for Human mountaineers and Dwarf traders, the tribes that formed Umbirch eventually cleared away the wild, and set up powerful defenses to protect from outer threats. A successful merchant class arose, trading rare ore mined from the Emberpeak Mountains with that mined from the Stonejaw itself. What was once a waypost developed into a town with a populace of nearly a thousand inhabitants.
As the southeasternmost major member of the Common Leage, Umbirch had a proud military history. It was responsible for maintaining watch over a vast region along the Dotted Plains as well as the northeast Sea of Trees, especially the Vanishing Grove, where threats could emerge at any point. The town was mainly made up of humans and dwarves, though had a small minority of other mountainous races.
The town's relative isolation caused a variety of regional differences from most Common states. This was especially notable in matters of religion: Umbirch's policies were guided by the Church of Torm, and all official townspeople were required to be registed members of Torm's church. This church shared a similar philosophy and symbol to the well-known goddess Umera, leading religious scholars to believe that at some point, there was a split in the deity's etymology.
In addition to divine devotion, the town had a tradition of venerating its famous soldiers. This was particularly true of Yilmaz Mylenthalas, considered to be the strongest warrior that the Umbirch had ever produced; the former legionnaire eventually became the General of the Common League's northern regiment. Statues of Yilmaz could be found throughout the town, alongside those of Iodun the Unifier.
