ASG 003 - The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea

Completed

On the day of the Grand Minauros Invitational, Ellenor had dressed the party in garish outfits to keep their identities hidden. While Duplicity secured a boat, Leila visited Stable Reliable Steeds, renting a carriage to take the group to the Afterlife Casino. When they arrived, they found only one ferryman working; as Rasmus was already disguised as a casino employee, the overwhelmed worker asked him to help, and he boarded the first ferry ahead of the others. The rest of the group ended up bickering with some professional players heading to the tournament, who were frustrated at the long lines. Haughty and wearing a breastplate of GleamingAnaïs Bellefleur made an enemy of Ellenor as tension grew between the groups. The thieves had the last laugh, however, when Anaïs' Dwarven companion had his Prosthetic Leg removed at the checkpoint, forcing him to hop around the casino.

During the ride, Rasmus spoke with Temperance Varell, who dropped the foreboding boatman act and became chatty. The warlock took the chance to send his unseen servant under the boat, and then deeper into the casino, hiding under a bridge with Ellenor's Bag of Holding. Once inside, they reunited, then split off with Leila wildshaped in Rasmus' pocket. Gaining access with Thrill's keycard, he used his Fey presence to charm the performers into leaving the staging area. Leila stayed behind, found the last Potion of Animal Friendship, and charmed the depressed lion. She promised to free Emrys and the monkeys after the heist, and filled with magical vigor, the lion agreed to raid the security office. They intimidated most of the guards into the cell room, but Boldness tried to flee to warn Quentin. With renewed bloodlust, Emrys lunged at the tiefling and nearly killed her against Leila's direct orders. As Rasmus locked up the rest, the druid managed to heal Boldness' mortal wounds in time, and swipe her keycard in the process.

Meanwhile, Ellenor and Nessa waited at Bar Malbolge, where Libation saw through their disguises. Thrill had been fired the day prior due to his stolen keycard, and over a slow conversation with Nessa, the bartender sussed out the truth of what happened. Rather than report the thieves, he chose help, in exchange for an equal cut of the take. Libation ensured no staff entered the employee areas as Rasmus gave Nessa his keycard, claiming it was "orders from security". Unaccosted, Nessa entered Quentin's office and picked his locked desk, finding gold, a glass key, and a bone rod capable of controlling Virgil.

In the vault, she and Rasmus narrowly avoided death by minotaur as the half-elf figured out how to mentally command the skeleton. They siphoned Duplicity's stolen earnings back into her locked Bag of Holding and pilfered magic items taken from patrons, including a Wand of Pyrotechnics, an Enhanced rapier, the prosthetic leg, and Anaïs Bellefleur's Breastplate of Gleaming. Gearing for the final part of the heist, they distributed their personal items from Ellenor's Bag of Holding, and Rasmus watched from the security room as Nessa and Leila joined her. The rogue had been surveying the Invitational while trying to catch Quentin's eye, playing the role of a flirtatious and obnoxious noblewoman. She found the statuette watched oer by a guard, but could not figure out how to open its magical glass case.

Bellefleur would end up winning the Grand Minauros Invitational, but would never receive her prize. Leila caused a scene by vomiting spores around Quentin and the guards, and pretending to be panicked, Ellenor tackled the gnome to the ground. During the chaos, Nessa used his glass key to open the case without triggering its magic, then swapped the statuette with the golden gnomish dildo. Leila made to exit, claiming to need a doctor, as Nessa slipped away. Quentin looked to the case, realized the trick, and shouted for guards to pursue; without hesitation, Ellenor ripped off her dress and tore through the crowd, before Rasmus joined them with magical speed after paying Libation "only" a hundred gold pieces.

Leila summoned a fog cloud to cover their escape, and Nessa scattered ball bearings to slow the guards. Still disguised as staff, Rasmus convinced the few pursuers who had maintained pace that the thieves had fled to the docks, and they spread the fake news to Quentin. The group sprinted down to the Cafe Nessus, and the "tiefling" ordered the patrons to leave as Ellenor readied grappling hooks and ropes at the cafe's railing. Dramatically, the party scaled down its waterfall into the Shifting Blue, where Duplicity waited, having hidden her boat in a nearby cove. As they rowed off, Quentin had finally made his way to Nessus and yelled threats from the cliffside, but the group was already too far to catch. Duplicity held the statuette aloft in victory as the thieves had officially robbed the Afterlife.

After receiving payment and parting ways, they laid low and returned to Doctor Dannel's apartment. The next day, as a bonus for undertaking the heist, the Golden Vault sent each an item via animal messenger. Ellenor received a pair of Boots of Elvenkind, Nessa a packet of Dust of Disappearance, Rasmus a pair of Sending Stones, and Leilatha a Cloak of Elvenkind; with unequivocal success, they readied themselves for their next mission.
