Anaïs Bellefleur was a professional Three-Dragon Ante player from Fort Verdane, a fortified city near the border with Elthys. Her father served in the local garrison, and her mother taught language and arithmetic to the children of officers. While she was born into a military family, she chose not to follow the military path, unlike many of her peers. Anaïs spent most of her early years inside the fort’s walls, where she picked up card games from soldiers, and earned steady winnings by the time she was a teenager.
By her early adulthood, Anaïs had built a reputation across several cities as a sharp, if haughty, gambler. Over the years became somewhat overconfident in her skill and developed a taste for the finer things. Even at the card tables, she flaunted her past prizes, the most notable of which was a breastplate of Gleaming, a piece of enchanted armor that stayed clean and unmarked no matter where she went.
Anaïs toured the western Common League gambling circuit for years, until her old rival Quentin Togglepocket Whee Quickweasel Witt invited her to a tournament. The "Grand Minauros Invitational" was the first at his new Afterlife Casino, west of Cliffsunder, and its prize was a golden statuette of an Erinyes.
