Duplicity Kye

Abandoned by her Human parents due to her surprise Devilborn heritage, Kye grew up an urchin. She was taken in by a young gang of similar kids, and learned to hide and steal from cargo sitting on the Grandport. Kye was set to live a thief's life, until she lucked out, getting a job as a cleaner in a lower Cliffsunder gambling hall. Watching players lose fortunes over games like Life And Death and Three-Dragon Ante, she learned games by studying their mistakes, memorizing every tell and strategy. By the time she was old enough to sit at the table, she could read the cards in a way that made others uneasy.

The devilborn adopted the virtue name "Duplicity" in reference to her skill at bluffing, though still kept Kye as a surname. Despite her new title, Duplicity had very little patience for liars or cheats outside expected card-table deception. She was bold, confident, and genuinely kind, though not always nice. She never played for luck, only for control, knowing when to fold and when to push. When Duplicity became an adult, she began touring a gambling circuit across western Commona, making a name for herself as a skilled three-dragon ante player. 

In her very first professional tournament, Duplicity defeated seven other high-ranked players, among them Quentin Togglepocket Whee Quickweasel Witt and Gildur Draak. In addition to winning a large sum of gold, she was given a modified Bag of Holding of purple fabric with red stitching. To remove any items from the bag, the holder had to provide the command word "hyacinth," a code which only Duplicity knew, and she kept her winnings on her at all times. 

After the tournament, she befriended Togglepocket, and the two formed a plan to save enough winnings to open their own casino. But just as they seemed poised to put their plan in action, Quentin disappeared, taking all their money with him; he resurfaced years later, having built the Afterlife Casino using the stolen money. Duplicity swore revenge, and after learning that Gildur Draak helped him build the casino, told him about how Quentin betrayed her. Furious at Quentin, he provided her Gildur's Map, a key component in getting even.
