Running the Red Hand of Doom

This is a journal of how I adapted the Red Hand of Doom, from a previous version of Dungeons and Dragons (3E) to fifth edition (5e). As a part of that work I also moved the location of the Elsir's Vale, making the city of Triboar play the role of the city of Brindol. This is a great adventure, with the players essentially spending most of their time as special operations while an unstoppable army sweeps across the countryside.  Would I play it again, yes?

I'm using individual journal entries below to speak about the process of adaptation.

The Mass Combat Never Happened

Why, because my life got too busy. Out small dog suffered a kidney failure and that is what I focused on. After working through this life threatening medical emergency for a month he is okay now, and I don't regret missing the mass combat one bit. With that said, here are my impression:

  • Doable - Maybe the 2017 Mass combat system is flawed, but who care, you are the DM and can address these issue by building a balanced scenario.
  • Difficult - Not all players have the time to learn a new gaming system. That's what Mass Combat is, a new system. Sure, it's simple, but it's also very different.
  • The Map - Just having a big map of a city under siege laid out on a bit table is awesome. Even better, we placed defenders on the little 1x1 inch squares. As a DM I referenced this to see which NPC might wander into game night, needing or providing help.

Overall, I'd say never be afraid to scrap something that either your are your players have no time for. I'm in a unique position to retired and playing DnD, but I know most people hove challenging work environments many have difficult personal lives. Scrape it, if your player or you can't handle it.
